Nanyuki School is a boys’ national secondary school located in Laikipia County. The school’s history dates to December 1964, when it was established on grounds previously used as a hostel for children of British Army personnel.
A year later, in 1965, the first group of 35 students was admitted, marking the start of an institution that would become one of Kenya’s most respected boys’ national schools.
As was customary at the time, Nanyuki Boys was founded through an Act of Parliament.
It was officially opened in 1969 by then Vice President, the late Daniel Arap Moi, and formally registered on July 26, 1969.
Initially, the school operated as a mixed-day and boarding institution with three streams.

However, in 1979, the day school component was scrapped, and the boarding section took full precedence—a move that solidified its identity as a residential academic hub.
The same year marked another turning point. Thanks to the support of the late Hon. G.G. Kariuki, then MP for Laikipia West Constituency, the school received a boost with the construction of a new dormitory.
1979 also saw the school elevated to offer ‘A’ level classes, a privilege it maintained until 1989 when Kenya transitioned to the 8-4-4 education system.
The school continued to expand, growing from three streams to four in 2004 to accommodate the increasing demand for places.
Today, Nanyuki School is the only boys’ national school in Laikipia County and currently serves a student population of approximately 1000.

The school has also consistently upheld a strong academic record in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations over the years.
Each year, over 400 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
Nanyuki School was the most sought-after school by students seeking to join Form One in 2024 alongside Kabianga High School and Pangani Girls High School, according to analysis of 2023 placement results.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 341 candidates, with 92.7% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

2 students scored a straight A, while 53 scored an A-. Additionally, 79 students attained a B+, 91 scored a B, while 45 managed a B-.
46 students scored a C+, 15 scored a C, 7 scored a C-, and the lowest grade recorded was a D+ obtained by three students.
The school’s impressive performance saw the students achieve a mean score of 8.9 in the 2024 KCSE.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Nanyuki School was placed in Cluster Two (II), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
