The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a statement clarifying that recent media reports on the looming disbandment of the Commission are incorrect, misleading, and a misrepresentation of the facts.
In a press release dated November 5, 2025, NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia stated that the current commission, which assumed office on November 19, 2019, will conclude its term on 17th November 2025, in line with the National Cohesion and Integration Act

“The NCIC remains fully operational and continues to execute its legal mandate. Murkomen Initiates Succession
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has formally launched the process to appoint a new leadership team for the NCIC ahead of the current commissioners’ term expiry on November 17.
In a gazette notice dated November 3, 2025, Murkomen declared the positions of chairperson and seven commissioners vacant, in line with the National Cohesion and Integration Act, which limits service to a single six-year term.
To oversee the recruitment, Murkomen has constituted a selection panel comprising retired Lady Justice Hannah Okwengu, former NTSA Director General Francis Meja, governance expert Reuben Chirchir, public service specialist Pauline Mcharo, Col. (Rtd.) Alfred Mshimba and legal practitioner Michael Nzomo Mbithuka.
The panel is tasked with advertising the vacancies, shortlisting candidates, and submitting names to the President for appointment.
This transition comes at a critical time, as NCIC’s role in curbing hate speech and fostering national unity remains central ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NCIC was established in 2008 following the 2007–2008 post-election violence that claimed over 1,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.
