A fire razed several businesses and properties of unknown value in the Kariobangi area of Nairobi on Sunday, February 24.
The incident occurred at the Kariobangi Light Industrial Area, with reports indicating that the fire began around noon at one property before spreading to others.
Efforts to contain the fire continued into the night, as the Nairobi City County Fire Department struggled to control the blaze independently, prompting them to seek additional reinforcements.
In a statement issued on Sunday night, the Kenya Red Cross reported that efforts to contain the fire had been ongoing for nine hours.
“For the last nine hours, efforts to contain the fire at Kariobangi Light Industries have been ongoing. Firefighters from the Nairobi City County and Kiambu County Fire Departments are working to put out the blaze, which continues to reignite,” the statement read.
Fire Affects Several Businesses and 2 Schools in Kariobangi Light Industrial Area
The Kenya Red Cross further stated that several business premises and two schools had been affected, with the extent of the damage yet to be determined.
So far, 10 people with minor injuries had been attended to by the Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with St. John Ambulance.

This fire incident came days after another inferno ravaged a section of the vast Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) grassland.
Videos and photos shared on social media showed a large blaze near the Embakasi Garrison, accompanied by thick black smoke rising into the sky.
Reports indicate that the fire began on Friday evening, spreading across a significant portion of the JKIA grassland toward 75 Airport-North Road.
Huge Fire Ravages JKIA Grassland
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed that the fire was limited to non-operational grassland areas and did not pose any threat to essential infrastructure or airport operations.

Emergency teams from the KAA Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting Service, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), and the Nairobi County Fire Unit responded promptly and successfully brought the fire under control.
“A coordinated response team, comprising the KAA Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting Service, the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), National Police Service, Kenya Pipeline, Nairobi County Fire Unit, KK Security and G4S worked diligently to bring the fire under control, leading to successful containment,” read part of the statement.
All airport operations, including flights, passenger services, and cargo activities, continued without interruption during the incident.
