ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has resigned as chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee, citing circumstances beyond his control.
Oburu announced his resignation during the committee’s meeting on August 11, clarifying that he had voluntarily relinquished the leadership position and had not been removed.
He said the decision was prompted by reasons beyond his control, while assuring members that the transition would be orderly.
“There is no coup here. There is only a peaceful transfer, and whoever you elect will peacefully take over,” Oburu said.
The senator thanked members of the committee for their support and reiterated that he would continue serving as a member of the Energy Committee despite leaving the chairmanship.
William Kisang Elected New Committee Chair
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang was unanimously elected to replace Oburu as chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee.
Kisang had been serving as the committee’s vice chairperson before taking over the leadership position.

In his acceptance remarks, Kisang thanked fellow senators for entrusting him with the responsibility and acknowledged that he was succeeding a senior political figure.
He said he would rely on the experience and guidance of committee members as he takes charge, particularly in advancing issues affecting electricity access.
“We are going to use your guidance as our patron to ensure our people get power (electricity),” Kisang said.
Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla was subsequently elected as the new vice chairperson of the committee, replacing Kisang.
Ogolla expressed gratitude to Oburu and ODM for supporting her elevation to the committee’s leadership.
She also thanked fellow committee members for entrusting her with the position.
Oburu will continue serving on the Senate Energy Committee despite relinquishing the chairmanship.

The Energy Committee is one of the Senate’s key oversight committees and is responsible for handling matters relating to energy policy, electricity generation and distribution, renewable energy, petroleum and fossil fuel development.
The committee also scrutinizes legislation affecting the sector and exercises oversight over agencies and institutions under the Ministry of Energy.
During his tenure, Oburu chaired committee sittings and engagements on issues affecting electricity access, energy infrastructure and broader sector reforms. His resignation ends an 18-month stint at the helm of one of the Senate’s key oversight committees.
Despite stepping down as chairperson, Oburu said he will remain a member of the committee and continue contributing to its work.
