Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has broken silence about running for President in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a Twitter Space on Sunday, July 7, Omtatah listed certain conditions that must be in place for him to run for Presidency in the next polls.

The Senator explained that he will not vie for the country’s head of state position just to occupy the top post, adding that he will only do so if the people want him to.

“The answer is why not? But I will not run for president because I want to be president but because the people think I am the best driver of the vehicle they have invented,” he said.

“If there is a clear vehicle that wants to turn the direction of this country and people think I am the best driver I will have a duty to do so.”

Omtatah also said that he needs the support of the people to run and win the presidency. He stated that he cannot rule out running for the presidency, reiterating that he will make the decision at the appropriate time.

“But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Nothing is ruled out; everything is possible. When we are at war, you don’t leave the battle to soldiers. War is never won by soldiers but by the general people who rise behind them,” he said.

Omtatah maintained that there must be calls from the ground with clear rules of engagement before he considers running in 2027.

He explained that there must be clear structures within which he will operate, to limit his influence and help him resist the temptations of power.

“I must be me leading a team where I am indispensable not a personality cult, otherwise I will be set up for a personality failure,” he said.

“I am not superhuman. There must be those clear terms of engagement but most important as part of a team not as an individual collecting all manner of characters to proper over the pass line.”

Change in Election System

Additionally, the Senator said he must see evidence that Gen Z has registered as voters and that there is a change in how elections are conducted.

“We must have a digital election. If these things are in place I will comfortably run for the president of this country if the people of Kenya think that I am the best the candidate within that particular time,” he said.

Okiya Omtatah stated that presidential election results should be declared at the constituency level, not at Bomas.

He explained that the results announced by the Constituency Returning Officer should be final, and the national tallying center should merely aggregate these results.

“We must get to a point where we have tamper prove elections that can be declared in real time without those who cook elections having time to manipulate and interfere with the results,” Omtatah stated.
