Kenya is in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.  Odinga, affectionately known as “Baba,” passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India. He was pronounced dead at Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, Kochi.

Born to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President and a prominent independence figure, and Mary Juma Odinga, Raila grew up in a family deeply involved in shaping the country’s destiny.

His older brother, Oburu Odinga, is a seasoned politician and current Senator for Siaya County, and Ruth Odinga

Raila was married to Ida Odinga, a respected businesswoman and education advocate. Together, they nurtured a family that, while largely private, has been part of his enduring legacy.

Fidel Odinga

Fidel Castro Odinga, the son of Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga, was found dead in his home near Nairobi on  January 4, 2015, sparking a police investigation and minor unrest in the capital, according to authorities and media reports.

Police said Fidel, who was regarded as a potential successor to his father, returned home on Saturday night after an evening out with friends and was discovered dead in his bed the following morning.

Among Raila Odinga’s four children, Fidel was the most prominent, having closely followed in his father’s political footsteps and achieved significant recognition in the country.

Before his death in 2015, Fidel was married twice. His first marriage was to Veronica Wanjiru Nganga in 2007, but the union ended in divorce in 2011.

In 2012, Fidel married Lwam Gatachew Bekele, his Eritrean partner of nearly two years, in a private, invitation-only ceremony. The couple welcomed their first child on Wednesday, 31st July 2013.

She is the elder sister of Winnie Odinga and Raila Odinga Junior, with the late Fidel Odinga being the family’s firstborn.

Throughout her life, Rosemary, now 44, has faced significant challenges, including serious health issues that almost left her blind.

She actively supported her father’s political ambitions, joining his presidential campaign team in 2007 and again in 2013 as part of the lobby group Nairobi for Raila.

In 2017, she had planned to contest the Kibera Constituency parliamentary seat, but her political aspirations were put on hold due to health concerns.

Born on March 6, 1990, to Raila and Ida Odinga, Winnie is the youngest in the family. She attended Rusinga School, then moved on to Brookhouse High School, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communication and International Business from the University of Pennsylvania.

Raila Junior

Raila Odinga Junior was born in 1979 to prominent Kenyan politician Raila Odinga and Ida Odinga.

He pursued his education in accounting and finance, earning a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance from the University of Wales in 2002, followed by an MSc in Finance from the University of Leeds in 2004.

He is the CEO and executive producer of Creative Hub, a production company, and is active on social media, where he often shares updates about his work and family life.

Raila Junior is married and has a son, balancing his successful business career with his role as a father.
