Kenyan activist Hanifa Farsafi is seeking clarification from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) regarding the condition of Boniface Kariuki, a mask hawker who was shot during the June 17 protests.
“I sincerely hope KNH is not concealing the real situation of Boniface Kariuki,” she posted.
In a post shared on X on June 21 before it was deleted, Farsafi included a text message update about Kariuki’s health, stating:
“The bullet is lodged in his head and can’t be removed. He was in surgery again yesterday. He is still alive, just not doing well.”
According to the message, seven surgeons attended to him, but they reportedly expressed doubts about his chances of survival.
The message further noted that even if Boniface Kariuki survives his current condition, most of his brain matter is reportedly damaged or lost, meaning he would likely remain unaware of his surroundings.
Boniface Kariuki Health Update
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) acting CEO and Senior Medical Specialist Dr. William Sigilai revealed Mwangi’s health update on June 18.
According to Dr. Sigilai, the hawker was shot with a rubber bullet. However, their suspicions will be confirmed after analysis by specialists.
“At this point, we were uncertain. We are not experts in that field. We are usually required to remove whatever we find and submit it for analysis by the relevant bodies. I can only say that we suspect it is rubber,” said Dr Sigilai while addressing the press.

KNH On the Medical Condition of Boniface Kariuki
Additionally, he explained that Boniface Mwangi Kariuki was shot on the left side of the head during the protests.
The bullet was removed, but he remains in critical condition and has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Dr. Sigilai has explained that the businessman may have suffered brain damage.
“Upon arrival at the Accident and Emergency Department, he was critically ill with a gunshot wound to the head, resulting in severe brain injury and excessive bleeding.
“The emergency care team, led by the emergency physician, Dr. Janet Sugut, swung into action, stabilized his condition, and placed him on life support,” stated the hospital.

Okiya Omtatah Confirms Mwangi is Alive
At the same time, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah clarified that Boniface Mwangi is alive, contrary to earlier reports that had claimed he was dead.
“I woke up early and came to KNH to confirm that the boy is not dead. A doctor assured me that he is still alive,” he said.
Further, he revealed that there are other victims of the protests currently in the hospital receiving treatment.
