Tensions within the Republican Party are growing after new claims suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump may have squandered a crucial opportunity to prevent further escalation in the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The allegations have sparked criticism from some conservative voices who believe the president’s actions may have undermined fragile diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities in the region.
The controversy follows an analysis by Trita Parsi, who reported that a rare diplomatic opening emerged when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian released a video message directed at neighboring countries.
According to Parsi, the message was intended to signal a potential shift toward de-escalation during the intensifying regional conflict.
Parsi said the Iranian leader, speaking as head of the country’s interim leadership council, announced that attacks on neighboring states would cease if their territories were not used as launching grounds for strikes against Iran. The move was reportedly designed as the first step in a broader effort to reduce tensions across the region.

Regional governments were expected to respond cautiously to the gesture, Parsi explained, as they monitored whether Iran would actually reduce its military actions. The process was expected to unfold gradually, with reciprocal steps aimed at calming the situation.
However, before regional actors could respond to the conciliatory tone, Trump intervened publicly on his social media platform Truth Social. In the post, the president declared victory and issued harsh remarks directed at Iran, including threats warning of “complete destruction and certain death.”
Parsi argued that the comments undermined the delicate diplomatic moment. According to his account, the aggressive rhetoric not only embarrassed the Iranian leadership but also complicated regional states’ ability to reciprocate Iran’s de-escalation gesture without appearing weak domestically.
The situation worsened, Parsi claimed, after a U.S. strike reportedly targeted a water desalination facility on Qeshm Island in Iran. The facility is critical for providing drinking water in the area.

He argued that the attack crossed a significant red line and may have violated international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions.
The claims have resonated with some conservative commentators and former Republican figures who rarely criticize Trump publicly. Former Republican official John Jackson shared the analysis on social media, writing bluntly, “Trump blew it, if this is correct.”
The post was later amplified by conservative attorney George Conway, a longtime critic of Trump who previously helped found the anti-Trump Republican group the Lincoln Project. Conway’s repost further fueled debate among political observers about whether the administration’s approach to the conflict has backfired.
The criticism comes at a particularly sensitive moment as hostilities in the region continue to escalate. Reports indicate that Israel recently launched strikes targeting Iran’s oil infrastructure, raising fears that Tehran could retaliate and widen the war further.
