The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) released the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results on Thursday, December 11, 2025, clearing the way for Grade 9 learners to transition to Grade 10 and senior schools based on their performance and selected pathways.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced a 100 per cent transition rate for the 1.13 million Grade 9 learners, noting that placement into senior schools and career pathways would begin immediately through a digital system to ensure transparency.

Addressing concerns from parents and learners, Bitok said students dissatisfied with their initial placement would be allowed to revise their school and pathway choices digitally.

“If you are given a school and you don’t like it, you will revise digitally,” he said.

He added that revisions would be allowed within a week, with parents expected to know the senior secondary schools where their children have been placed by December 20.

“We have a team already working very hard in Mombasa to ensure proper placement. Starting Monday, the day after tomorrow, some students will know their placements, and all students will know where they have been placed by December 20. We aim to ensure a fair placement process. No parent should worry at all,” the PS assured.

Grading System Used by KNEC to Transition Grade 9 Students to Grade 10

The recently released results of the first-ever Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) marked a shift in the evaluation process, transitioning to a competency-based, eight-level grading system.

Unlike traditional single-score rankings, learners are now categorized into four main performance bands, each with two achievement levels, creating an eight-point scale for each of the nine subjects assessed.

The maximum cumulative score is 72 points, calculated as 8 points per subject across 9 subjects. The achievement levels range from AL 8 to AL 1, with students earning 1-8 points based on their performance. The scoring breakdown is as follows:

– 75–100%: Exceeding Expectations (7–8 points)

– 41–74%: Meeting Expectations (5–6 points)

– 21–40%: Approaching Expectations (3–4 points)

– 1–20%: Below Expectations (1–2 points)

According to the Ministry of Education, student placements for KJSEA candidates will be determined by their performance, chosen pathways, and school preferences.

Senior schools offer three distinct pathways tailored to align with students’ talents and career interests:

  1. Arts and Sports Science (APSS): This pathway emphasizes creative arts, performing arts, and sports sciences, aiming to prepare students for careers in creative industries, coaching, sports management, and related fields.
  2. Social Sciences (SS): Designed for students interested in humanities, languages, business studies, and economics, this pathway prepares them for careers in law, business, media, education, and social work.
  3. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM): This pathway is for students with strong interests and abilities in science and technical fields, providing a solid foundation for careers in medicine, engineering, technology, agriculture, and research.
