President William Ruto has announced a salary increase for all police officers across the country beginning July 2024.
Speaking during the installation of the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Prisons Service Patrick Mwiti, the Head of State announced that officers across the country will receive the first installment of the salary increase in July.
Further, Ruto said that the move was in line with a promise he made to the officers in 2023, to ensure that their well-being was taken care of.
“As a commitment that I made to our men in uniform, from this month, we will be living up to our commitment to enhance the salaries of policemen and our prison officers, in line with the commitment that we made,” stated Ruto
“You come into office with good tidings for the men and women at the prisons because this month, they will receive their first installment of increment of salaries.”

Ruto Makes Additional Promises to Police Officers
While addressing the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Prisons Service, Ruto said that he would support him and work with him to improve the living standards of prison officers.
In addition, he said that he expects the commissioner General to lead the project and help in ensuring decent houses are established for the officers.
“We are undertaking a huge program to ensure that our prisons service have decent house. We will be working with you and the team to identify areas and work with the state department of housing to ensure that our prison officers live in decent housing across the country,” he said.
Also, the president said that he will require support from Mwiti to continue the national tree growing program as well as the food production program.
According to him, the food production program has the potential of feeding prisons officers and extending supply to the rest of the country.
“We have a whole food production process where prisons is involved. A few thousands of acres of the prisons service are now under food production.
“It is my expectation of you to make sure that every arable piece of land under the prisons service is put under food production for purposes of supplying food to the prison service and the rest of the country.
“We have a big program being undertaken by the prisons on tree planting. We will be very keen to see what the service is going to do by way of contribution to this important national program,” he added.

Recent Changes in the National Police Service
Following the resignation of Police Inspector General Japhet Koome, Douglas Kanja took over the position in acting capacity.
However, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has since shortlisted eight candidates for the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
In a notice on Friday, July 19, NPSC said it shortlisted four candidates for the position of DIG, Kenya Police, and four for the position of DIG, Administration Police Service.
“The following 8 number of candidates have been shortlisted and scheduled to appear before the Commission for interviews on Monday, 22nd July 2024 as indicated here below,” read part of the notice.
Moreover, acting DIG, Kenya Police, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat is among the candidates who have been shortlisted to occupy the position.
