President William Ruto departs this evening for Japan to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), scheduled to take place in Yokohama.
The summit will bring together African and Japanese leaders, development partners, and investors to strengthen collaboration in trade, investment, and sustainable development.
Kenya and Japan partnership
Kenya and Japan enjoy a longstanding development partnership that has expanded significantly over the years.
In a press release by the Office of the President of Kenya through the State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, Kenya has reported of Japan’s extended development to Kenya that is currently worth over Ksh600 billion, making Kenya the leading recipient of Japanese assistance in Africa.
President Ruto’s visit is expected to consolidate this cooperation by unlocking new opportunities in infrastructure, investment, and human capital development.
During his engagements, President Ruto is expected to prioritize discussions on flagship infrastructure projects that are central to Kenya’s economic transformation agenda.
These include the expansion of the Mombasa Port, development of the Mombasa Port Area Road, and the establishment of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone.
Nairobi’s urban transport systems are also earmarked for collaboration, as Kenya seeks to modernize its cities and boost economic productivity.
Agriculture, forestry, and climate change mitigation will also feature prominently in the discussions.
Japan is already supporting the rehabilitation of irrigation schemes and spearheading reforestation initiatives in Kenya.
The two nations will try to deepen cooperation in these areas to address food security and environmental sustainability.
Educational exchanges will be another critical area of focus, with Kenya and Japan exploring opportunities in science, technology, and innovation.

Ruto at TICAD 9

Notably, he will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to deepen Kenya-Japan relations with the discussions will focus on expanding avenues of cooperation in trade, investment, and development assistance.
The meeting is expected to set a roadmap for scaling up joint projects in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology.
