President Wiliam Ruto has revealed that plans are underway to replace two million motorbikes commonly known as Boda Boda in Kenya with electric motorbikes.
The Head of State also said that the timeline for transitions is already in place.
While speaking to Indian Investors during his state visit to India, President Ruto said his plan to transition Kenya’s boda-boda sector to e-mobility is part of the efforts Kenya in making to go green.
Also, Ruto noted that the e-mobility plans will cut across the transport sector in Kenya.
“Our intention is to replace two million motorbikes in Kenya with electric motorbikes, and of course the whole transport industry from buses to motor vehicle, three wheelers and the rest of it,” he stated.
Furthermore, the president who has been on a 2-day state visit to India also expressed his commitment to establishing manufacturing plants for the E-Mobility vehicles.
“There is opportunity for manufacture, and we have committed ourselves to E mobility, we are changing policy and we have set timelines on when we must transition to E Mobility,” the president added.

Ruto Formalizing the Boda Boda Business
Similarly on June 26th, 2023, Ruto formalized the boda boda business in a bid to enhance compliance and safety.
He introduced the plan to have electric motorbikes for small scale entrepreneurs in the transport sectors.
During the launch the President said the government would reduce taxes on electric motorbike parts to reduce the cost of the final product and encourage its uptake.
“Using electric motorbike, you will save up to 68 per cent to power electric motorbikes and save up to 30 per cent in servicing cost,” he said.
Likewise, he affirmed government’s commitment to reforming Boda Boda business and stop the criminalization of the sector.
President Ruto Agenda During his State Visit to India
According to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, among Ruto’s agenda on the visit was to hold bilateral talks with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Further he revealed that the discussions would revolve around agriculture, trade, investment promotion, and healthcare partnerships among other crucial sectors including pharmaceutical production.

Meanwhile President William Ruto on December 2, noted that Kenya had launched a plan that seeks to accelerate economic green growth in Africa and his commitment in promoting climate mitigation and adaptation.
Further the head of state added that Africa Green Industrialization is expected to scale up green industries across the continent.
