Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has expressed his gratitude after his Nairobi City County office was ranked as the best government office by the World Bank.
Notably, Sakaja’s office was named as the best green government office on the continent at the ongoing United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in Dubai.
“We are grateful for this recognition and remain committed to continue making Nairobi green and achieve the target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050,” said Sakaja.
Additionally, the findings from the World Bank study ranked Sakaja’s office as 100% less embodied in carbon materials, 23% on water and 28% on energy savings.
“The certification of the Nairobi City County Governor’s office as the first International Finance Corporation Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (IFC EDGE) Green Government Office makes it the first IFC EDGE Green Government office in Africa,” the World Bank noted.
In addition, the findings of the study were audited in collaboration with a third party with the submissions done to the Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI).
On the other hand, GBCI had the mandate to confirm and certify whether the findings of the study met the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE standard).

Sakaja on Nairobi County Office Green Efforts
Sakaja went on to add that Nairobi County is implementing the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and will continue pushing for green legislation and incentives.
Also, Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS) CEO Nasra Nanda noted that the certification was not just a win for Nairobi but for Kenya and Africa as a whole.
Nanda, who is also a member of the Nairobi County Assembly was speaking on the sidelines of COP 28, where she received the certification on behalf of the governor.
“The certification is a win for Kenya and Africa as a whole and is significant because we have recently concluded the Urban Agenda and Buildings Day at COP,” said Nanda.

According to the KGBS CEO, the Urban Agenda and Buildings Day focuses on supporting mayors, cities being at the heart of the conversation.
Additionally, World Bank congratulated Governor Sakaja, the current vice co-chair at the C40 Cities for being the first African Mayor/Governor to receive the certification.
On Monday, December 11, 2023, the Nairobi governor flagged off 50 additional skips and loaders to boost garbage collection in the City.
“We continue to increase our capacity in terms of equipment which shall aid in Nairobi’s Green efforts ensuring a clean and green environment,” said Sakaja during the flagging off.
