Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Baby James, clarifying that the child chose to remain under his care despite his family’s request to return him to Kisii.
In a statement on Monday, April 6, Mike Sonko revealed that he had decided to take Baby James back to Kisii, but the child “clearly and firmly refused” and chose to remain under his care.
“Last night, I made arrangements to take Baby James back to Kisii. However, as I calmly prepared him, following his uncle’s request and without applying any pressure, the child clearly and firmly refused. He chose to remain under my care,” Sonko stated.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Baby James grows up in a safe, stable environment with proper care and quality education.
Sonko added that he has successfully handled similar cases in the past and intends to continue providing a supportive home for the child.
Sonko to Facilitate Visits to Baby James
He stated that he respects the child’s extended family and is willing to facilitate visits, including covering travel expenses between Kisii and Nairobi for family members who wish to see Baby James.
“I continue to respect the baby’s family. Anyone from his extended family, including grandpas, uncles, aunts, cousins, and others who wish to follow his progress or visit him, is welcome. I will even be ready to facilitate this, including covering travel expenses from Kisii to Nairobi and back,” read part of his statement.
Mike Sonko also condemned misinformation circulating on social media, noting that the situation had been distorted by individuals with personal interests.
Sonko further warned that attempts to use Baby James for clout, blackmail, or intimidation would not be tolerated.
This comes hours after Sonko revealed that the child’s uncle had started blackmailing him, accusing him of taking away their child.
He stated that the uncle had been employed in his home following a request by the wider family after he adopted James.
However, after some time, he allegedly started stealing, forcing Sonko to suspend him from work.
Adoption of Baby James
On January 25, 2025, Mike Sonko adopted the three-year-old boy who witnessed the murder of his father in Mathare’s Area 4 while being taken to school.
