The Billionaires of Kenya: Gideon Muriuki, One of the Highest-Paid Bank CEOs

Billionaire Gideon Muriuki is one of Kenya’s most accomplished bank CEOs, leading the Co-operative Bank of Kenya.

Gideon Muriuki is the Group Managing Director & CEO of Co-operative Bank.

He has over 30 years of experience in banking and finance and was voted CEO of the Year in Africa 2014 by The International Banker.

He presided over the Bank’s turnaround, taking it from a massive loss of KSh 2.3 billion in 2000 to a profit before tax of KSh 20.7 billion in 2019.

Born on September 1, 1964, in Mung’aria village, Tetu, Nyeri County, Muriuki grew up in a family that valued education.

Education

He began school at age six in Kaigonde Village and later attended Kiganjo Primary School, Kagumo High School

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, which he earned in 1988, and is a Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers.

In 2011, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management.

Additionally, in 2022, he received a Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) from the African International University and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Co-operative University of Kenya.

Gideon Kariuki’s Journey at Co-operative Bank

Gideon Muriuki began his career with the Co-operative Bank in 1996 as a Senior Corporate Manager.

Through exceptional skill and dedication, he rose rapidly, becoming Director of Corporate and Institutional Banking by 1999.

In 2001, he assumed the role of Managing Director, initiating a remarkable turnaround for the Bank.

According to the Fintech Association of Kenya, under his leadership, Co-operative Bank recovered from a loss of KSh 2.3 billion in 2000 to a profit before tax of KSh 22.6 billion in 2021.

During the same period, loans and advances grew from KSh 15 billion to over KSh 300 billion, while customer deposits rose from KSh 17 billion to more than KSh 420 billion.

Total assets increased from Ksh24 billion to over Ksh600 billion, and the customer base expanded from 125,000 to over 9 million.

Wealth And Affluence

He owns a 2 percent stake in Co-operative Bank, equivalent to 117.47 million shares. Under his leadership, the Bank has expanded regionally, with subsidiaries including Kingdom Bank Ltd. and Co-operative Bank of South Sudan.

Muriuki has been instrumental in driving the Bank’s profitability and growth strategy.

In 2024, he earned a total compensation of Ksh172.5 million, representing an 11.7% increase from the previous year.

Awards and Achievements

He received national honors, including the Order of the Grand Warrior in 2005, Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear in 2011, and Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear in 2017.

He also gained international recognition, including the Chevalier de L’ordre National du Burkina Faso and the Lion of Judah Award.

He has also served as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Africa International University and the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA).
