“Trump Lies Through His Teeth, Says Whatever Pops into His Head,” Schumer on the Killing of Children in Iran

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer delivered a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump on Tuesday, March 10th, criticizing his handling of the deadly missile strike on an all-girls school in southern Iran, which claimed the lives of approximately 170 people, most of them children.

Schumer called Trump’s statements “beyond asinine” and accused him of lying to the public about who was responsible for the tragedy.

During Senate proceedings, Schumer said:

“Trump lies through his teeth. He says whatever pops into his head, no matter what the truth is. And we all know he lies, but on something as formidable as this, it’s appalling.”

The comments were in response to Trump’s assertion that Iranian Tomahawk missiles were responsible for the February 28 strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab, Iran.

Schumer pointed out that Iran does not have Tomahawk missiles, a U.S.-made long-range cruise missile, and called the president’s claims “beyond asinine.”

“No other leader in the administration does whatever Trump wants, claiming Iranians did this. Trump is lying through his teeth,” Schumer added.

The school strike is among the deadliest incidents in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, which began on February 28, 2026, with U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military installations.

Video and satellite evidence reviewed by analysts appear to show a Tomahawk missile striking near the school and an adjacent military base. While the Pentagon has confirmed that it is investigating civilian casualties, it has not disclosed details about the weapons used.

Schumer said that the administration’s public messaging had sown confusion and undermined trust, especially given the magnitude of the tragedy. He emphasized the need for full accountability and an independent, transparent investigation into the strike:

“So this morning I’ll be demanding full, independent, and transparent investigations to get to the bottom of what happened at the school and why so many innocent civilians were tragically killed. There needs to be accountability.”

Human rights organizations have condemned the strike and called for urgent action to protect civilians. The United Nations and UNESCO have labeled attacks on schools a potential violation of international humanitarian law, demanding independent verification of the facts.

Trump has suggested that either Iran or “somebody else” could have been behind the strike, without offering evidence. The administration maintains that civilian casualties are unintentional. But Schumer, referencing video evidence and weapons capabilities, dismissed such explanations as “misleading” and “dangerously inaccurate.”

While the Pentagon continues to review the incident, Schumer stressed that Congress must play a role in ensuring transparency and accountability, particularly when children are victims.

“The American people and the world deserve the truth,” Schumer said. “Nothing less will do.”
