The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia has announced when she is set to retire.
The TSC boss while speaking at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) annual general meeting on Tuesday, December 10 announced that she is set to retire early next year, ending her 10-year term at the commission.
Macharia was appointed to the helm of the Commission in June 2015, with her tenure later extended in 2020.
She made the announcement while extending her gratitude to KNUT for what she termed as “utmost professionalism” with which the union has dealt with her since she took over the role as TSC boss.
“Sincerely, I have no words to express my most profuse appreciation to Knut for the utmost professionalism with which you have dealt with me over the last nine years. As I approach the tail-end of my ten-year service as secretary and CEO of the TSC, I can only look back with an incredible tinge of satisfaction over our enviable work relationship in the office,” she said.
“I wish you the very best as you work to elevate the teaching profession to even higher standards.”
Macharia revealed that this year alone, TSC has had exclusive consultations with Knut more than 10 times.
“This excludes informal meetings that I have had with the SG and other leaders in the union. On this end, allow me to thank Knut for sponsoring some of the retreats we have had,” she said.
The career of CEO Dr Nancy Macharia
Dr. Macharia was appointed as TSC boss in 2015 for a renewable term of five years with her term which expired in 2020 being extended by another five years.

The TSC chief executive who is a trained teacher was born in the Central region of Kenya. She pursued her basic-level training in the same region before joining Kenyatta University (KU) for her higher education.
At KU, Dr Macharia graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree in English/Literature in 1987 after which she was immediately posted at Kahuhia Girls’ Secondary in Murang’a County where she taught for five years.
The tough-talking boss was then promoted to the rank of deputy head teacher at Kianderi Girls’ Secondary in the Murang’a County.
Macharia, upon her exit as a practicing teacher, joined TSC as a staffing officer where she rose through the ranks to the current post.
She succeeded the then-long-serving TSC boss, Gabriel Lengoibon.
The former teacher beat 69 other applicants and also achieved a record of being the first ever female executive to head the commission since its inception.
Macharia also holds a master’s degree in education from Bristol University in the United Kingdom, where she pursued the post-doctorate specializing in management of policy studies.
She has undergone training in diverse fields including Corporate Governance, Public Procurement, Policy Formation, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Proactive Management and Business Excellence Models, among others.
Differences with KNUT
Macharia’s tenure at TSC has had mixed reactions from stakeholders in the education sector, especially KNUT.

It was during her time in office when she had sharp differences with former KNUT boss Wilson Sossion over the involvement of teachers in the rolling out of the competency-based curriculum (CBC).
They also differed on the implementation of the career progression guidelines (CPGs) for the promotion of teachers, with the union preferring the Teachers’ Code of Regulations and the Schemes of Service for the Teaching Service.
Eventually, the matter ended up in court which ruled in favor of KNUT.
Aside from the disputes with teachers’ unions, Macharia is credited with the signing of the first collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between teachers and their employer.
TSC also introduced comprehensive health insurance coverage for teachers, although it has had various challenges along the way.
