The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Friday August 1, fired former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as its Secretary General.
In a statement on August 2, the ruling party said, former Mombasa Senator and EALA Member of Parliament Hassan Omar Hassan takes over as the Secretary General on an interim basis.
“In the meantime, upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and in accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the Secretary General on interim basis,” reads the statement in part.
“The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately.”
The statement further said the meeting was convened through the request of the members of the Committee to discuss, deliberate and agree on the way forward based on the events of the last few days in the Party and fundamentally, the events of the last few weeks in our Country.

Additionally, the Party mentioned that it will be implementing a raft of governing and administrative measures to accelerate its agenda and to set forth a distinctive path of inclusive, participative and consultative organisation.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Council (NEC) directed that the National Elections Board to make necessary adjustments and continue with the elections in the rest of the counties as earlier communicated.
“These elections will ultimately offer the members of the party an opportunity to choose their leaders from the polling centre all the way to the national level,” the statement further read.

The Political Parties Tribunal had earlier barred UDA from conducting NEC meeting today, pending hearing and determination of case filed by Cleophas Malala with mention set for August 13. Malala had called for the NEC meeting on August 9.
UDA Coup Leading to Dismissal of Cleophas Malala
The revocation of Malala’s appointment comes after Embu governor Cecily Mbarire who doubles as UDA’s national chairperson on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, said that the party will be convening a meeting on Friday.
This followed chaos witnessed at the party’s headquarters based along Ngong Road on July 31 which resulted to an attack on self-proclaimed SG Joe Khalende after supporters of the outgoing SG Cleophas Malala stormed the offices.
Khalende, a lawyer, claimed that Malala was going against the Party’s objectives including being against the broad-based government formed by President William Ruto.

However, Cleophas Malala in a retaliatory statement dismissed a letter alleging his resignation.
Malala termed the letter that circulated on social media on Tuesday as ‘propaganda’, insisting that the party is focused on helping President Ruto achieve his campaign promises to Kenyans.
“Ignore propaganda. The party is stable and focused on helping President William Ruto achieve his agenda for Kenya. Chama iko Imara,” Malala said on X.
The letter alleging his resignation claimed that he had done so, after deep reflection on recent troubling developments.
