The University of Nairobi (UoN) has made it to the top 1,000 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
The university’s position has improved from the 1,000-1,200 range it held previously since 2022, to now falling within the 909-950 range among 1,500 international institutions in the list.
UoN’s progress in the rankings this year is attributed to advancements in important areas like employment opportunities for graduates, academic reputation, international research collaborations, and the ratio of faculty to students.
Notably, the university saw a significant increase in employment outcomes, with a rise of 92.5%, placing it in the 251-300 range. The academic reputation also improved slightly from 9.6% in 2023 to 10% currently.
On the other hand, there was a decrease in employer reputation, which measures how employers view UoN graduates, dropping to 11.7% from 14.6% last year.
Despite this, the UoN saw a positive change in the number of citations each faculty member receives, with an increase to 20.1%, placing it in the 1,051-1,100 range. This indicator reflects the average number of citations per faculty member.
The university is recognized for its researchers, some of whom are highly cited in fields like health sciences. In terms of international research networks, UoN scored an average of 50.1%, demonstrating the depth of its research collaborations globally.
However, among all countries and regions, the United States has the most universities listed, with 197 institutions making it to the rankings. Next on the list is the United Kingdom with 90 and mainland China with 71.

Additionally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains the number one university. Imperial College London has moved up four spots to secure the second position.
University of Oxford and Harvard University follow in third and fourth places respectively. The University of Cambridge completes the top five universities in the list.

Academic Reputation measures how well-respected a university is in the academic community. Employer Reputation, on its part, gauges how employers perceive graduates from a particular university.
In addition, Faculty-Student Ratio looks at the number of students compared to the number of teaching staff at the university.
Citations per Faculty: Assesses the impact of a university’s research by analyzing the number of citations received per faculty member.
International Research Collaborations: Evaluates the extent of a university’s partnerships and collaborations with other institutions worldwide.
