University of Nairobi (UoN) students have called off a planned strike that was scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
In a notice dated August 2, the student union announced that the University Management had met and adopted a report to review hostel accommodation rates, pending approval by the university’s various governance organs.
Additionally, the union stated that the final decision is expected to be communicated by Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
“We issue this directive following the internal memo issued by the school referenced UON/DCA/07/30, informing the students that the University Management met and adopted a report for review of hostel accommodation rates pending approval by the various governance organs of the university. With which the approved outcome is to be communicated by Wednesday, 6th August 2025,” read the notice in part.
The student union noted that it has temporarily suspended the planned ‘Total Students’ Strike’ that was scheduled to take place.
UoN Students’ Union Gives Further Directives
The students were informed that further directives would be issued after the outcome of the meeting.
Additionally, the body instructed the students that they would reconvene on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 9:00 AM at the UNSA Office, Main Campus, and proceed together to collect and review the newly approved accommodation rates.
“We will reconvene on Wednesday, 6th August 2025, from 9 am at the UNSA Office, Main Campus, and proceed together to collect and review the newly approved accommodation rates,” read part of the notice.

UoN Threatens to Strike
However, the students’ body warned that if the University Management failed to release the updated accommodation rates by the stated deadline, they would immediately initiate a total suspension of all activities within the university and the Central Business District (CBD).
“Should the University Management fail to release the updated rates by then, we will immediately embark on a total suspension of all activities within the university and the Central Business District (CBD),” read the notice.
Moreover, the union stressed that they were taking the referenced memo as a sign of goodwill and commitment from the University Management.
Any failure to follow through, UNSA added, would be deeply disappointing and could be seen as disregarding the concerns and dignity of the student body.

Students Issue Demands
In their earlier demands, the students called for the immediate reduction of accommodation fees to a fair and affordable rate, as previously agreed upon.
They have also accused the Vice Chancellor of employing delay tactics in addressing the issue.
They further stated that the current rates are unsustainable and place an unfair burden on students, many of whom come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
They described the continued silence from the university administration as unacceptable.
“The current rates are unsustainable and continue to place an unfair burden on students, many of whom come from financially struggling backgrounds. Your continued silence is unacceptable,” read the statement.
