The US Embassy in Kenya has invited Kenyans to apply for the 2026-2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) program.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, April 23, the embassy announced that successful applicants will have the opportunity to teach Kiswahili in the United States while also studying at American institutions.
“Apply for the 2026-2027 Fulbright FLTA Program and teach Kiswahili in the U.S. while gaining valuable professional and cultural exchange experience,” read the notice in part.

Students and teachers are all eligible for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program.
FLTAs is administered by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or US embassies.
All FLTA Program applications are processed by these offices, and applicants must be nominated by a U.S. Embassy or a Fulbright Commission; independent applicants do not qualify.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright FLTA nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States.

Requirements for Application
To be eligible for the Fulbright FLTA Program, applicants must meet several key requirements.
First, they must reside in their country of nomination at the time of application.
They should also hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record—although a master’s degree is highly desirable at many host institutions.
In addition, candidates should be early-career teachers of English, those training to become English teachers, or educators in a related field. While prior teaching experience is preferred, it is not mandatory.
Applicants must also have a genuine interest in teaching their native language and culture to students in the United States.
English language proficiency is essential. This must be demonstrated by a recent test score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 79–80 on the internet-based TOEFL (IBT), or an overall score of 6.0 on the IELTS.
Scores should be submitted to the IIE using the institutional code 2326 on the day of the test.
Furthermore, successful candidates must be creative, self-reliant, and team-oriented, showing a willingness to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students.
They should also be flexible, open to learning, and able to adapt to life in both rural and urban settings and must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.
Importantly, they should not hold U.S. citizenship, as dual citizens are not eligible for participation in the program.

How to Apply
However, program eligibility and selection procedures vary widely by country.
Interested candidates should apply through the Foreign Fulbright Program – Apply. The application deadline is May 16.
The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).
It is part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program and aims to improve Americans’ understanding of foreign cultures and languages.
The program supports teaching assistantships in more than 35 languages at various U.S. universities.
It also gives educators from over 55 countries a chance to grow professionally and experience American culture firsthand.
