The US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya has announced it will be closed on Thursday, October 10, to observe a public holiday.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Embassy noted that the decision is in observance of Mazingira Day.
“The Embassy will be closed tomorrow to celebrate Mazingira Day,” announced the Embassy.
Further, the Embassy confirmed that regular activities and all services offered shall resume on Friday, October 11.
US Embassy services that will be affected
During this period, essential services offered by the Embassy will be temporarily halted.
Such services include processing of non-immigrant and migrant services for travel to the US, information on studying in the US and cultural exchange programs.
Additionally, the embassy provides updates and safety information for travellers.
Moreover, the embassy provides the issuance and renewal of US passports to its citizens.
The United States Embassy also helps in emergencies such as arrests, deaths or financial crises of American citizens.

Furthermore, the United States embassy oversees the registration of children born abroad to U.S. citizens.
Other services the Embassy offers to its citizens include assistance with absentee voting in U.S. elections, as well as help with Social Security, Veterans Affairs, and other federal benefits.
The embassy made the announcement after the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry declared Thursday, October 10 a public holiday.

According to the Ministry, Mazingira Day is a crucial opportunity to accelerate environmental protection and raise awareness of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

- Clean-up activities to rid the environment of unwanted waste from homes, roads, parks, beaches and any other areas that require clean-up;
- Tree planting is in line with the government’s efforts towards accelerating landscape and ecosystem restoration by growing 15 Billion trees by 2032 which will also be instrumental in addressing the effects of climate change. These can be done in homes, schools and other available spaces;
- Organising, and attending forums as well as getting involved in activities that highlight pollution control and good waste management practices that encourage the circular economy model of reduce, reuse and recycle at household and commercial levels.
