The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Professor Benedict Mutua, addressed concerns regarding salary delays four days after lecturers at the institution went on strike due to the delayed payment of December 2024 salaries.
This statement follows a seven-day strike notice issued by the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) over unresolved grievances.
In a notice dated Friday, January 17, Prof. Mutua reassured staff that the government is taking action to resolve the issue, emphasizing that all staff salaries will be disbursed without further delays.
“We are addressing the concerns regarding the delay in December 2024 salaries and are working to mitigate the circumstances. The government, particularly the Ministry of Education, is committed to ensuring that all salaries are paid promptly,” the notice read.

Prof. Mutua acknowledged the challenges faced by staff during this difficult time and emphasized the importance of measures put in place to stabilize the university’s financial situation.
He also expressed gratitude to the university staff for their patience despite the ongoing financial challenges.

“We understand the inconvenience this delay may have caused, and we sincerely appreciate your patience. Your dedication and commitment to your responsibilities are highly valued,” he commended.
The VC urged staff to remain patient and confident that the salary issue is being addressed with the urgency it requires.
UASU Issues Seven Day strike notice
TUK staff had picketed on Tuesday, January 14, following a notice issued to the VC informing him of the protest.
“UASU, KUSU, and KUDHEIHA hereby notify all unionizable staff members that in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya, Article 37, there will be a peaceful procession on Tuesday, January 14, starting from 9:00 a.m. from the Red Square,” the notice stated.
The objective of the picketing was to present petitions and memoranda to the National Assembly, the Ministry of Finance & National Treasury, and the Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga issued a seven-day strike notice on January 16, citing several unresolved grievances.
“Pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010; the Labor Relations Act, 2007; and the Employment Act, 2012, UASU issues a seven-day strike notice, effective from the date of this letter to the Technical University of Kenya Council,” the statement read.
The union has warned that lecturers will strike on January 23 if their demands are not met.
