Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has called for greater inclusion of women in top leadership positions in the country.
Speaking during the G7 women Pre-launch in Homabay County on 26th February, Waiguru highlighted Governor Wanga’s tireless dedication as a female governor, emphasizing her hands-on approach to governance.
She echoed her praise for Homabay’s Governor Gladys Wanga’s exemplary commitment to duty.
“If you are in Nyanza, spend a week here and see how Governor Gladys wanga delivers her work, how she wakes up in the morning and goes to work,” remarked Waiguru, applauding Wanga’s proactive leadership style.
The G7 is a women Governor’s caucus of the Council of Governors that seeks to support women Governors deliver the promise of devolution & Leadership.
“The prelaunch of G7 Strategy will pursue the increase from 7 women governors to G16 to meet the constitutional 2/3 principle in the next election cycle,” the governor said.
Waiguru recounted observing Wanga overseeing projects late into the night, emphasizing the unique dedication often seen in women leaders. “Only a woman governor can demonstrate such commitment,” Waiguru affirmed.

Waiguru Calling for Women’s Support
Advocating for the empowerment of women in governance, Waiguru urged for concerted efforts to elevate female leaders.
“We need women to champion at the grassroots level,” she declared, pushing for increased female representation in decision-making roles.

“We want you women at Mashinani to be our G7 to G16 champions,” she declared, advocating for the elevation of women leaders and their representation in decision-making positions.
She called upon communities to rally behind women leaders, particularly in regions where female representation falls below the constitutional threshold.
Highlighting the importance of supporting female governors, Waiguru stressed the need to surpass expectations and ensure their continued success.

“Hold one woman’s hand and help us achieve the minimum constitutional threshold of 30%,” urged Governor Waiguru, highlighting the significance of gender parity in governance.

Female Governors
Other five female governors elected during the 2022 general elections include Susan Kihika, Nakuru governor who trounced the then sitting Governor Lee Kinyanjui of the ruling Jubilee party to secure herself a spot in the Council of Governors.
Wavinya Ndeti, governor of Machakos who secured the seat after two unsuccessful attempts.
Kawira Mwangaza became the for Meru County after thrashing incumbent Kiraitu Murungi and Senator Mithika Linturi. She also served previously as a Woman Representative for Meru County.
Fatuma Achani is the governor for Kwale County while Cicily Mbarire is the governor of Embu. Mbarire was initially a nominated Member of Parliament.
