Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has criticized President William Ruto’s visit to the United States which has been a hot topic in the past one week.
Wamuchomba was speaking on Friday, May 24, during an interview on Inooro TV where she was invited for a discussion about current developments in politics.
In her submissions, she argued that the cost of the trip reported to have been in the region of Ksh 200 million is not justified and should have been used to hire the Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who have been on strike.
When asked about the implications of the state visit regarding Kenya’s diplomatic policy, the MP opined that the Kenya Kwanza administration has been working to dislodge China as key ally and instead shifting towards the west.
According to her, the commitment to help construct the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway is an indication of a new order where the U.S. will establish its influence in Kenya’s infrastructural development.
“This is the reason why America is funding similar projects as China like the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway,” said Wamuchomba.

She insisted if the United States is genuine in helping Kenya, it should have gone for other unique projects like agriculture which has been neglected for a long time.
“If America really wants to help us, why are they coming to duplicate the projects we already have? Why can’t they come with their special?
For example, no developed country has invested heavily in Agriculture, matters concerning Irrigation, we’ve never seen any country that has come to loan us good money that will help us in Agriculture,” she lamented.
According to her, the strategic position of the US in Africa has been diminishing and China has taken over in countries like Zambia and Kenya.
The Githunguri MP who was elected through the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) headed by the president, also expressed her reasons for dissenting from the party’s positions.
In her submissions, Wamuchomba mentioned policies including contentious taxes as one of the reasons she has been vocal in opposing the government.

“How could he impose a tax which is oppressing 80% of people who voted for him,” she ascertained. The MP also claimed that the Mt Kenya farmers have been exposed to more tax than other farmers in the country since the finance bill 2022/2023.
The MP contended that her major disagreement with the financial bill 2024 is the eco-tax and excise tax on edible crude oil which will increase by Ksh 130 per Littre if passed.
She finished by declaring she will lead in efforts to ensure that the ‘one man one shilling one vote’ bill is passed amid recent criticism of leaders proposing adoption of the revenue sharing formula.
