The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather forecast to residents of select areas.
KMD in a statement on April 20,2024, listed the areas expected to continue receiving rains.
Among the areas listed by the Met department which are expected to receive heavy rainfall include several parts of the Rift Valley and the Coastal region.
“Heavy rainfall being experienced over several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Southeastern Lowlands, coastal and Northeastern sectors is expected to continue from 19 April 2024,” read part of the statement.
According to the Met department, the heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24hrs is predicted over areas East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area, and Southeast Lowlands.
KMD Lists areas to receive rains
The rains which have also been predicted over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and the Coastline are set to likely intensify from 20th to 21st April 2024.

On the other hand, the department predicted rainfall of more than 50mm in 24hrs along the coastline and Northeastern parts of the country.
“The heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied with gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the Southeastern sector,” the statement adds.
Residents residing in all counties except Samburu, Turkana, Moyale and Mandera counties were advised to be on the lookout for floods during the heavy rains.
They were further advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and reduced visibility. Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream,” read the statement.

Additionally, the department warned that strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages while large waves may affect marine activities.
The meteorological department further announced that it shall provide updates promptly if there are any changes.
This update comes amidst adverse effects that have been recorded in various parts of the country as a result of the ongoing heavy rains being experienced.
