The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has announced new sugarcane prices for farmers.
In a statement dated July 21, 2025, the Interim Sugarcane Pricing Committee approved new sugarcane prices, which take effect immediately.
The Interim Committee held its second meeting on July 17, 2025, to review the minimum sugarcane price. Having considered the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices over the past three months (April – June 2025), the Committee approved an increase in the price of cane.
The Committee approved an increase in the cane price from Ksh 5,500 to Ksh 5,750 per tonne. The review of sugarcane prices increases the minimum price per tonne by Ksh 250.
The latest review brings the total increment within the last four months to Ksh 500 per tonne, a 9.5% rise from April, offering a boost to sugarcane farmers across western Kenya.
“The adjustment promises more favourable earnings, improved financial stability, and renewed motivation for farmers ahead of peak harvest seasons. With enhanced returns at stake, growers can now walk into their local banks with a bigger smile and a stronger bargaining position,” Kagwe said.
CS Kagwe has reaffirmed his commitment to stabilizing the sugar industry through regular price reviews and improved support for farmers.

Ministry of Agriculture Reviews Sugarcane Prices
The review was conducted by the 4th Interim Sugarcane Pricing Committee, which was appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development through a letter dated January 9, 2025.
The Committee held its second meeting on July 17, 2025, to assess and revise the minimum sugarcane price.
The timely price adjustment is set to benefit sugarcane farmers nationwide by guaranteeing improved earnings that reflect the current rise in sugar market prices.
“This progressive move reflects our commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector and ensuring fair compensation for the backbone of Kenya’s sugar industry,” the Kenya Sugar Board stated.

The Interim Sugarcane Pricing Committee is expected to continue reviewing prices regularly to keep them fair and in line with market trends.
Additionally, the Sugar Board has directed all stakeholders in the factories to comply with the new minimum cane price and ensure timely payments to farmers.
On May 26, 2025, the Kenya Sugar Board announced an upward revision of sugarcane prices, moving from the previous rate of Ksh 5,300 to Ksh 5,500 per tonne.
