A number of  Kenyans opt for these plates for different reasons, with some using them as status symbols, while others choose meaningful combinations, such as birth dates, initials, business names, or special codes that carry personal significance.

How to Apply for Personalized Number Plates via eCitizen

The process applies to registered owners of motor vehicles with civilian registration numbers who wish to be issued personalized number plates.

The vehicle must have been registered with civilian numbers. The process does not apply to Public Service Vehicles (PSV) and Commercial Motor Vehicles.

Applications for personalized number plates are made through the eCitizen Portal.

The process starts by logging in to the portal and selecting the vehicle to be registered. Applicants then proceed to the “Motor Vehicle Services” section and choose the “Reflective Plate” option.

They are required to select the type of plate—normal, special, or customized—and to indicate the reason for the application, such as new-generation plates. Applicants also choose their preferred notification method.

If the number you are applying for is already taken, the system will show it as unavailable. You will decide to wait for the following series of number plates,

Supporting documents must then be uploaded, including a scanned copy of the logbook and a PDF image of the current number plates. Applicants are also required to select a collection centre and provide the ID number of the person authorized to collect the plates.

Once an applicant confirms all details and accepts the declaration, they then proceed to payment and submit the application.

Approval, Processing, and Collection

Once the application is submitted, applicants receive confirmation messages via SMS. Further updates are sent once the application is approved and when the plates are ready for collection.

The processing period is typically around five working days, depending on verification and production timelines.

When collecting the plates, motorists must present their original national ID and any old plates they are replacing.
