Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has signaled the possibility of another cohort of recruits joining Kiganjo Police Training College before the country heads to the polls. The CS has passionately asked President William Ruto to approve another police recruitment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the passing-out parade of more than 6,000 police constables at the National Police Service Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, on August 28, Murkomen appealed to the President to issue a directive the recruit another contingent.
Murkomen said the additional recruitment would help strengthen Kenya’s security agencies while creating employment opportunities for young Kenyans.
He noted that many who could benefit from recruitment are members of Generation Z, who have faced challenges accessing employment opportunities.
“Your Excellency, I want to make a request to you. Just as you helped these young people secure employment opportunities, we ask you today to say one word and give us a directive to recruit another contingent of police officers, Your Excellency, so that we can strengthen our police service and our security services and give an opportunity to many young people, most of whom are from the Gen Z generation, to come and serve our country,” said Murkomen.

Addressing the graduating officers, Ruto said the country was approaching another important democratic milestone and reminded the recruits that protecting constitutional rights would be central to their duties once deployed across the country.
The President said political parties and candidates must be free to organize and campaign, while citizens should be able to assemble, express their views and cast their votes without fear or intimidation.
Ruto stressed that the police and other security agencies have a constitutional obligation to safeguard this democratic space and ensure that elections are conducted peacefully.
Ruto also raised concerns over the increasing use of hired gangs to disrupt political meetings and intimidate opponents, warning that such actions have no place in Kenya’s democracy.
“Politically sponsored violence has no place in our democracy,” the President said, directing security agencies to take firm and impartial action against anyone involved in financing, organizing or carrying out political violence.
He added that law enforcement officers should not only pursue those who carry out acts of violence but also those who recruit, transport and finance such groups.
Ruto further cautioned officers against treating legitimate political dissent as a criminal offense, urging them to distinguish between peaceful democratic participation and criminal activity.
He said Kenya must protect both security and constitutional freedoms as the country prepares for the August 10, 2027, General Election.

The country conducted major police recruitment drives in 2022 and again in 2025, when plans were approved to recruit 10,000 police constables nationwide.
The exercise took place across all counties, and candidates were selected after meeting physical, academic, and medical requirements.
After recruitment, successful candidates were posted to various police training colleges, including the Kiganjo Police Training Campus, one of the largest in the country.
The recruits reported for training in December, and the Basic Recruit Training Course officially began on December 16, 2025, after the Inspector-General of Police launched it.
The programme ran for nine months and included physical fitness training, discipline drills, classroom lessons, weapons handling, and basic policing skills.
