Djed Spence, an English player of Kenyan heritage who plays as a right-back for the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, has been called up to the England national team. In a statement dated Friday, August 29, 2025, Djed Spence, who is also eligible to represent Kenya’s Harambee Stars, was named among the players selected for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
“From our #YoungLions to the #ThreeLions, @DjedSpence is ready to continue his England journey!” the statement read.
Spence has been playing for the England Under-21 team, nicknamed the Young Lions, and has transitioned to the senior team after his first call-up by coach Thomas Tuchel.
Djed Spence Earns Spot in England Senior Team After Call-Up
Djed joined the England Under-21 squad for the first time in March 2022, making his debut against Albania. He appeared for the Young Lions side seven times between 2022 and 2023.
Djed Spence was born on August 9, 2000. He is English by nationality with Kenyan heritage, as his mother is Kenyan and his father is of Jamaican origin.

Djed started his youth football career at Fulham. He then moved to Middlesbrough as a 17-year-old in July 2018.
He began with Middlesbrough’s Under-23 team and later joined the first team. He made his professional debut against Charlton in December 2019 and scored his first goal 19 days later against Huddersfield.
Football Career of the Right Back
Shortly after, he won the EFL Young Player of the Month award. In the 2021/22 season, he went on loan to Nottingham Forest. There, he played 46 matches and scored three goals, helping the team secure promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship play-offs.
Djed had a successful season and earned multiple awards in March, including EFL Championship Player of the Month, EFL Championship Goal of the Month, and the EFL Young Player of the Month for the second time.
At the end of the 2021/22 season, he was named to both the EFL Championship Team of the Season and the PFA Championship Team of the Year. In the first half of the 2022/23 season, he played six times for Middlesbrough. In January 2023, he joined Stade Rennais in France on loan for the rest of the season.

In August 2023, he joined Leeds United on loan, making seven appearances before returning to Middlesbrough in January 2024. Later that month, he joined Genoa on loan for the rest of the season.
His latest call-up was in May 2022 when he helped the team qualify for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Should he make his England debut for the senior team, he will no longer be eligible for the Harambee Stars national team.
