Eric Mutua is a prominent Kenyan lawyer, Senior Counsel, and politician.
He is best known for his leadership in the legal profession, specifically serving as the 46th Chairman or President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) from 2012 to 2016.
Early Life and Educational Background
Born in 1970, Eric Kyalo Mutua’s early life was defined by the boom of aircraft engines and a deep-seated desire to take to the skies.
His father was an inspiration, sparking his desire to become a pilot like him, who served as an air traffic controller at the Eastleigh Airbase in Nairobi.
Mutua’s dream shifted toward law after a specific incident, which he cites as a radical change of mind that triggered a new passion for justice and for defending the rule of law.
After completing his early education, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi to pursue legal studies, earning both a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Master of Laws (LLM).

During his undergraduate years, he was a firebrand activist, serving as the Secretary-General of the Students’ Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) in 1991.
He completed his Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1995.
Eric Mutua Career
Mutua made a name for himself shortly after graduation by taking on high-stakes cases. In 1999, he famously represented SONU officials pro bono, including the current Senate Majority Leader Irungu Kang’ata, after they were expelled by the university, winning the case against established legal giants like the late Mutula Kilonzo.
He served as the 46th President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) from 2012 to 2016 and remains the only president to have served two consecutive terms since the society’s founding in 1949. He also holds the record for the largest election majority in the last two decades, with 79%.
Eric has served as a Vice President of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), Treasurer of the East Africa Law Society, and a member of the Council of Legal Education.
The celebrated lawyer is the Managing Partner of E.K. Mutua & Company Advocates, a corporate and commercial law firm in Nairobi specializing in litigation, banking and finance, and property law.

In August 2022, he was granted the rank of Senior Counsel (SC) by the President of Kenya for his exemplary service.
The senior counsel represented the Kenya Airport Authority in a case that established structural interdicts as a relief for human rights violations in Kenya.
Kyalo successfully represented athlete Eric Keter in 2000, securing his inclusion in the Sydney Olympics.
He is a Certified Public Secretary (CPS), a Chartered Arbitrator, a Notary Public, and a Commissioner of Oaths.
