The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has advertised the position of the Managing Director (MD).
The MD’s position fell vacant after President Ruto fired the former Managing Director Benard Njiraini in May this year over contraband sugar scandal.
Following the dramatic exit of Njiraini, the board appointed Esther Ngari to fill the position in acting capacity.
In the advertisement for the position, KEBS announced that the MD will report to the National Standards Council (NCS).
Responsibilities of the Managing Director
The MD will provide visionary leadership to KEBS and facilitating achievement of set goals and objectives through efficient management of staff and resources.

He will lead the development and implementation of KEBS strategy, business plans and operating budgets to meet the country’s standardization, quality assurance, inspection, surveillance, and testing needs.
He will be responsible for safeguarding the organization’s assets including prudent management of the organization’s financial resources among other duties.

Contraband Sugar Scandal
President William Ruto in May 2023 suspended 27 officials including the former KEBS MD Njiraini in connection to contraband sugar that illegally found its way into the Kenyan market.
The contraband sugar in question was imported to the country in 2018 but was flagged by KEBS due to expiry date specification.
As such, the regulator declared the 20,000-50 kgs bags of sugar as unfit for human consumption.

Moreover, the sugar was set to be destroyed but was later decided to be converted for industrial ethanol use.
However, the industrial conversion did not take place and the sugar was irregularly diverted and unprocedural released to the market.
KEBS Managing Director Benard Njiraini and other senior officials of the Kenya Bureau of Standards lost their jobs as a result.
