On March 4, 2009, President Mwai Kibaki held a press conference at State House in Nairobi, accompanied by his then-wife, Lucy Kibaki.
The purpose of the press conference was to address various media reports linking him to an influential businesswoman from Nyeri, Mary Wambui, who was reported to be one of his spouses.
During the press conference, Kibaki firmly stated that he had only one wife, Lucy Kibaki, and stressed that his family structure was well-known, dismissing the rumors as falsehoods.
“I want to state something that I have wanted you to hold dear and permanently in your heart. You know, and I know, and everybody else knows that I’m married, and I have only one wife. And everyone in Kenya knows it. But the media keeps repeating that I have another wife or wives. I want to make it very clear that I have only one dear wife, Lucy, who is here. And I do not have any other,” Kibaki declared.
Kibaki Denies Having More than One Wife
Kibaki stated that he felt it was necessary to hold the press conference to explain the situation clearly. He wanted to ask the public to listen to him instead of continuing to spread false information.
“It does not help anyone, anywhere. And it cannot be anywhere near the truth, since the truth is known,” he stated.
Kibaki also clarified that he has four children, all of whom he shares with Lucy, and urged the media to verify this information directly with him if they were unsure.

He called on the public and media to respect the truth and warned of potential legal action against those perpetuating rumors about his marital status.
“Now I have gotten into this very foul mood, after hearing some statements made in the last few days. I don’t want to repeat them, but I want to say quite frankly, anyone who is bent on that course will see me in court or wherever they may find me. And we shall deal with them,” he added.
Lucy Admits She Was to Raid KTN After Storming Nation Centre
Lucy Kibaki, who was also present at the press conference, accused the media of tarnishing her family’s image.
“You are hurting us. The president did not say that. You have been tormenting us. I don’t know what you gain from this,” the First Lady remarked.

She expressed her frustration, stating that she had almost gone to KTN’s studio to confront them, similar to her previous encounter with the Nation Center over their coverage.
“You, KTN, I nearly came to your studios last night to attack you, just like I did to Nation. I heard you listening to someone named Muite talking about the president and telling lies, covered by so many people,” Lucy said.
Kibaki’s response came after media reports alleged that Kibaki had a second wife, Mary Wambui, whom he was rumored to have married under customary Kikuyu law in the 1970s.
