The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has in its new Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 timetable made historic changes.

According to the exam timetable published on its website, KNEC has detailed that the 2024 KCSE examination enters its third week on Monday, November 4, and students are set to begin exams for the large-candidature papers.

With the English paper and Chemistry dominating the first day, The Kenya Times has been keen to note the changes in timing that have never been in place with the past KCSE exams.

Consequently, candidates sitting the 2024 exams will do their tests during the morning hours, afternoon and evening. Some of the tests, across the timetable, will end at 5:00 pm.

Differences Compared to Past KCSE Timetables

Unlike timetables in the past years, 2024 KCSE candidates will have a two-and-a-half-hour break after completing the first paper, between 10:30 am and 2:00 pm.

This means that the second exam will stretch into the evening hours.

In the past years, candidates had a 30-minute break after completing the first exam. Therefore, the second exam began at 11:00 am and ended at around 1:30 pm or 2:00 pm, depending on the type of paper.

While the new timing was also adopted in the 2023 KCSE exams, the adoption of the same in the 2024 exams indicates that it could be the expected set rule for the following national examinations.

At the same time, KNEC has directed field officers to note that all containers will be opened at 7:00 am and mobile devices will be locked up during the examination time.

“Field officers are reminded of the following: All containers are to be opened at 7 am, mobile phones of all personnel in the centre are to be locked up and the key kept by the supervisor.

“All centre managers must have the approved list of persons in the centre who must have ID cards for identification.”

Other Changes Implemented for the Exams by KNEC

Earlier in August 2024, KNEC CEO David Njengere announced changes in the exam papers to curb exam cheating.

He said that students who will sit for the 2024 KCSE examination will have their papers customized, adding that candidates found breaking the rules will take personal responsibility.

Their names, index numbers, and other personal details will be pre-printed on the papers. Therefore, any malpractice by individual candidates will not lead to the punishment of an entire school or an examination centre.

Also, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in September 2024  updated its criteria for the selection of centre managers, supervisors, and invigilators for the national exams.
