Former Senior Economic Advisor Moses Kuria has addressed claims that he was used by President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to split Mbeere North votes in the by-elections, which ended with a narrow win for Leonmard Wamuthende.

In a statement on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Kuria said he was amused by allegations that his Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party was on a mission to divide votes in Mbeere North.

“I am amused by those saying the CCK party and I were on a mission to divide votes in Mbeere North. I have several questions,” said Kuria.

Moses Kuria Denies Being Used to Split Votes

Kuria questioned those accusing him of fronting CCK candidate Duncan Mbui, who garnered 2,480 votes, to allegedly split the votes of DCP candidate Newton Karish, who secured 15,308 votes and was backed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Karish lost to UDA candidate Leonard Wamuthende, who won with 15,802 votes.

Among the questions the CCK party leader posed was whether he or his party had entered into any political agreements that they failed to honour.

He also questioned whether any political party approached him for a deal.

“Were we even approached by anyone for a deal, and we declined?” Kuria asked.

Kuria further stated that he picked Duncan Mbui after he was dropped by Gachagua’s DCP party. He questioned why Gachagua and his allies abandoned Mbui.

Kuria also noted that UDA managed to unite all aspirants who lost to Wamuthende during nominations and wondered why Gachagua’s camp did not do the same.

CCK Party Leader Poses Questions to Gachagua and Allies

The former Senior Economic Advisor also questioned why attention was focused solely on him when there were five other candidates besides Karish, Wamuthende, and Mbui.

He also argued that he was the only leader from outside Mbeere who campaigned for Mbui, whereas Karish enjoyed support from numerous political heavyweights, yet Mbui still managed to garner 2,480 votes.

“The Karish team had Riggy G, Kalonzo, Eugene, Natembeya, Matiang’i, Karua, Kivuti, Muturi, Mukunji, Methu, and others. How do I garner 2,480 votes when I am alone, enough to spoil your votes?” said Kuria.

Kuria’s statement follows criticism from a section of Kenyans who accused him of being used by President Ruto to reduce the chances of Gachagua’s candidate winning the Mbeere North by-elections by fielding his own candidate.

A social media user, Kamau Kabogo, wrote: “The CCK party that belongs to fake impeached CS Moses Kiarie Kuria was in Mbeere North on a mission to divide votes, sent there by William Ruto so that the United Opposition can’t win.”

Another user, Billy Mwangi, posed a question on X: “Was Moses Kuria used to spoil votes in Mbeere North?”

PLP Party Leader Martha Karua responded, saying, “Good question.”

Following the opposition’s loss in the Mbeere North by-elections, Gachagua accused the state of using goons and police officers to overturn the will of the people.

“Use of goons and heavily armed police in civilian clothes to overturn the will of the people sets the stage for serious acrimony ahead of the 2027 General Elections, as witnessed in Mbeere North and Malava,” said Gachagua.
