A huge fire has left many families displaced and their properties destroyed in Mukuru Fuata Nyayo Village in South B ward, Starehe Constituency, in the early morning of Thursday, November 20, 2025.
The fire, reported around 2 am, continues to burn as emergency responders fight to contain its spread.
There are no casualties confirmed so far, but authorities have urged the residents to remain careful as the situation is still dangerous.
Morning Fire Razes Several Houses within Mukuru
The fire burnt down hundreds of mabati houses within minutes.
Due to the high population and the presence of highly flammable materials in the area, the fire spread quickly, overwhelming residents who were still asleep when it began.

Even though most of the families were sleeping, Witnesses and residents report hearing multiple explosions, assessed to be Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders exploding due to the intense heat.
This has left families with no belongings and forced them to start a new life.
Emergency Response Underway
Nairobi City County Fire and Rescue teams arrived on-site shortly after the incident was reported. Despite their efforts to control the spread, the limited access points in the settlements are slowing progress.
Despite their determination to save lives and property, the rescue team has faced several challenges, making it difficult for them to carry out the process smoothly.
“Access to deep sections of the informal settlement may be hindered by narrow pathways and crowd surges.” said Red Cross.
The local community has also mobilized residents, forming chains to help evacuate their stuck family members and whatever property they can. Despite their efforts, the quick spread of the fire is hindering the rescues’ progress.
Red Cross Advisory on Traffic and Security
Authorities have reported zero confirmed fatalities this morning. However, they highlighted that they would conduct thorough research after the fire is put off.
Residents in surrounding areas are urged to stay indoors, close windows, and wear masks due to the heavy smoke drifting across South B and the Industrial Area.

The public has been warned to avoid the scene entirely, as unexploded gas cylinders remain a significant danger.
Red Cross Advisory on Traffic and Security
The Red Cross has advised Motorists to expect heavy traffic in and around South B as emergency vehicles move in and crowds evacuate.
“Expect significant traffic congestion on roads leading to South B and the surrounding industrial area as emergency vehicles navigate the scene and residents evacuate.” Red Cross said.
Police have also visited the area to establish an exclusion zone and ensure the safety of residents.
The cause of the Fire is under investigation
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators will begin assessments once the fire is out.
Authorities urge that displacement numbers and a full casualty report will be communicated as more information becomes available.
“The situation remains fluid. Authorities are working to stabilize the scene. Further updates regarding displacement figures, confirmed casualties, and the cause of the fire will be issued by official authorities upon investigation.” said Red cross.
