The Nairobi Expressway is a 27-kilometer toll road stretching from Mlolongo to the James Gichuru Junction. Its primary purpose is to ease traffic congestion along the busy Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way.
The road is managed and operated by Moja Expressway Company under a public-private partnership (PPP).
To access the Expressway, motorists must first identify their entry and exit points based on their destinations.
The Nairobi Expressway has 11 interchanges that allow drivers to conveniently join or exit at various points along the route.
Some of the key interchanges include Mlolongo, Syokimau, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, and Westlands.
How to Access the Nairobi Expressway
Before using the Expressway, drivers should plan their journey by identifying their preferred entry and exit points.
This helps estimate toll fees, as charges vary depending on the distance traveled.

After identifying your entry and exit points, the next step is to choose your payment option.
While approaching the Expressway, you’ll find two clearly marked lanes:
- Manual Toll Collection (MTC) lanes
- Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes
These lanes are properly marked to ensure smooth and efficient operations at all toll stations.
For Manual Toll Collection (MTC) Users
Motorists using the MTC lane must stop at the toll booth on entry and obtain a pass voucher from the automatic ticket machine.
When the light signal turns green, the barrier lifts, allowing you to proceed.
At the exit, maintain a speed below 5 km/h and hand over your ticket to the toll attendant for payment.
If paying in cash, the required amount will be displayed on the monitor. Once the payment is successful, the green light will turn on, and the barrier will lift, granting you a safe exit from the Expressway.
For Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) Users
The ETC lanes are equipped with a digital communication device that connects with the On-Board Unit (OBU) installed in your vehicle.
As you approach the entrance, maintain a speed below 20 km/h so the system can detect your OBU and automatically lift the barrier, eliminating the need to stop.
At the exit, maintain the same speed limit for the system to automatically deduct toll points from your account before the barrier opens.

To use the ETC service, you must first visit a Nairobi Expressway Service Center, such as the one at Expressway Plaza on Mombasa Road.
Carry your ID or passport and vehicle logbook, pay a one-time service charge, and purchase a minimum amount of toll points. The OBU device will then be installed in your car.
