The Russian government has launched fresh attacks on parts of Ukraine amid ongoing peace talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire between the warring nations.
The strikes, which began on the night of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, saw Russia targeting Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, with Shahed drones fitted with jet engines. Russia reportedly launched 629 drones and missiles against Ukraine.
According to reports, the drones were allegedly equipped with engines manufactured in the Czech Republic and China, as well as a German fuel pump. CCTV footage circulating on social media showed a missile striking one of the buildings in Kyiv.
At least 14 people were killed in the attack on Kyiv, including a two-year-old child and teenagers aged 14 and 17, according to the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.
Russia Attacks Ukraine’s Capital, Kyiv
About 40 people were hurt in a huge attack involving Russian missiles and suicide drones. Several people are believed to still be trapped under the rubble where drones struck. The EU representative office building in Kyiv was also damaged.
By Thursday morning, the number of injured in Kyiv had risen to 45. Rescue teams continue to work at the scene, where more people are feared to be trapped.

On the same morning, August 28, 2025, Russia also struck an Intercity plus passenger train that was scheduled to operate on the Kyiv–Kharkiv route.
The full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, when Moscow launched a large-scale invasion.
Latest on Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks
Despite the overnight strikes that killed at least 15 people, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Russia remains interested in pursuing peace talks. Russia insists its strikes targeted military facilities, while Ukraine maintains that civilians were heavily affected.
Peace talks are ongoing, largely driven by U.S. President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts. However, despite intense negotiations, no breakthroughs have been achieved.

On August 15, 2025, Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss a potential ceasefire, but no agreement was reached.
Trump initially pushed for an immediate ceasefire but later shifted toward supporting a broader peace deal after Putin rejected a ceasefire-first approach.
On August 18, 2025, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington, where discussions focused on security guarantees for Ukraine and possible territorial compromises. Still, no concrete progress was made toward either a ceasefire or a lasting peace agreement.
