Fresh concerns over student safety have emerged after St. Joseph’s Seminary Senior School in Molo and another school in Nyeri recorded separate school fires within days of the deadly dormitory blaze at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
According to reports as of May 30, the latest incidents occurred at night at St. Joseph’s Seminary Senior School in Molo, Nakuru County, and St. Paul Githakwa Secondary School in Tetu, Nyeri County, where dormitories caught fire in separate incidents that authorities are still investigating.
According to videos and images from the scene, as seen by the Kenya Times, flames and thick smoke are rising from part of the institution.
St. Joseph’s Seminary Molo Records Dormitory Fire, All Students Accounted For
A fire broke out late on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Seminary Senior School in Molo, Nakuru County, affecting a dormitory building within the institution.
“St. Joseph’s Seminary Senior School in Molo, Nakuru County on fire. Emergency responders and school authorities are working to contain the situation,” Getu FM Radio reported the incident.
The Catholic boys’ boarding secondary school reported that the incident occurred on Saturday, May 30, 2026, during the night, with some reports placing the start of the fire between 1:00 AM and 5:15 AM in one of the Form Two dormitories.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters from Nakuru County, were deployed and managed to contain the blaze.
According to available sources, authorities confirmed that no deaths or injuries were reported. All students were safely evacuated from the affected dormitory buildings as the fire spread.
“St. Joseph Seminary in Molo, Nakuru County, is on fire. Authorities have confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far,” confirmed Henix Obuchunju.
The blaze caused significant damage to dormitory structures, although the full extent of the destruction and the cost have not yet been officially established. By the evening of May 30, reports indicated that the fire had been fully contained.
Preliminary information suggests the cause of the St. Joseph’s Seminary Senior School fire remains under investigation by police and fire services.

St. Paul Githakwa Secondary School Staff Contain Dormitory Fire in Suspected Arson
A fire broke out at St. Paul Githakwa Secondary School in Tetu Sub-County, Nyeri County, in the early hours of the morning, affecting a girls’ dormitory in an incident that authorities suspect may be linked to arson involving some learners.
According to the school principal, Margaret Wambugu, the 2 a.m. fire was first noticed by a student who had woken up and raised the alarm, alerting others and enabling a rapid response from teachers and school staff. Their quick action helped contain the blaze before it could spread further.
“We noticed the fire at around 2 a.m. when a student who had woken up raised the alarm, and our teachers and staff responded immediately to contain the situation before it escalated,” said Margaret Wambugu, the Principal, St. Paul Githakwa Secondary School.
According to TV reports on May 30, the fire destroyed approximately 20 beds in a dormitory housing 43 students, although no injuries were reported. Students were safely evacuated as staff and responders managed the situation.
The school administration has indicated that preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been started by students allegedly planning a strike. Four learners have since been taken into police custody to assist with investigations and are expected to be transferred for further questioning.
The incident comes at a time when the country is still mourning 16 students who died in a separate dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, raising renewed concerns over student safety and discipline in schools.
