US political commentator Jennifer Ewing has warned that President Donald Trump is receiving flawed guidance on the escalating conflict with Iran. Ewing made the remarks on British television this weekend, March 28.

Her comments came as Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched their first missile attack on Israeli targets since the war began a month ago, adding a volatile additional layer to an already turbulent situation in the Middle East.

Speaking on GB News, Ewing described the Houthis as a “disorganized group of pirates” who nonetheless “can definitely do some damage.”

She pointed to the group’s ballistic missile barrage aimed at sensitive Israeli military sites in southern Israel as evidence that underestimating these actors could backfire badly.

While Israeli defenses intercepted the missiles, the strike represented a clear entry by the Houthis into the fray, signaling that Iran’s network of proxies isn’t sitting idle.

Ewing suggested that Trump’s aggressive posture in the conflict stems from “bad advice” influencing his decisions.

She believes that the president might be steered toward a wider confrontation without fully weighing the risks of drawing in more players, such as the Houthis.

“This group of pirates can definitely do some damage,” she opined, stressing how even a seemingly disorganized militia is able to disrupt shipping lanes or force Israel and the US to divert resources.

The war broke out in late February when US and Israeli forces launched surprise strikes on Iranian sites, including nuclear facilities and military targets.

The initial campaign, which was considered a big success then, resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other top officials.

Iran responded by launching missile and drone strikes against Israel and the US in the region.

The initial objective of the operation was to control Iran’s nuclear drive. However, the operation has widened to include the entire region, and the oil market is also suffering as a result.

Trump has been saying that the operation is to ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons and has called it a top priority.

In recent days, he’s spoken of ongoing negotiations, floated a 15-point plan, and claimed that Iran is eager for a deal.

He has threatened strikes on Iranian power plants if Tehran doesn’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies.

Yet Ewing’s critique taps into increasing worry among some observers that the administration’s hawkish line risks overreach.

The Houthi attack adds a new twist to the Iran war.

These rebels, who control large parts of Yemen, have a track record of targeting shipping in the Red Sea, causing headaches for international trade.

During earlier rounds of regional tension, they fired dozens of missiles and drones at Israel, most of which were intercepted but still tied up defenses and raised fears of economic damage.

Now, with the current war a month old, their decision to strike again suggests coordination, or at least alignment, with Iran’s “axis of resistance.”

It is also believed that the Houthis’ entry into the war could make it more difficult to manage the conflict. It could stretch US and Israeli air defenses thinner, prompt more retaliatory strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, and even pose a new threat to shipping lanes.

There is also an anxiety about the potential effect on oil prices and supply chains, especially if the attacks escalate.

Ewing’s arguments elicit different reactions.

In social media circles, people have reacted along familiar lines to Ewing’s arguments. Some have accused Ewing of having lean tendencies and have argued that failing to confront Iran directly means more threats in the future.

Others who sided with her noted that the human and financial costs were already piling up, from displaced civilians to the deployment of additional US Marines in the region.

Meanwhile, diplomatic moves continue in the background, with Pakistan reportedly hosting talks among regional powers, but optimism remains guarded.
