The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya, a key ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over remarks he made against the Somali community.
MP Gakuya is to appear before the Commission on Thursday, 5th September 2024, for investigation over his remarks.
“Take notice that you are hereby required to appear at the NCIC offices within Britam Towers Upper Hill 18th Floor on Thursday 5th September 2024 at 11:00am so as to assist the Commission with aforementioned ongoing investigations,” read the statement in part.
NCIC in a statement dated August 26 stated that Gakuya made inflammatory remarks in the Kikuyu language against Somalis conducting businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
MP Gakuya Utterances
According to the NCIC, Gakuya claimed that Kikuyus have handed over Nairobi CBD to Somalis, warning that this could lead to Somalis taking control of the entire city and kicking them out.
“What I can tell the Kikuyus is that giving out properties that are in Nairobi CBD to those foreigners just because they are the highest bidders with pirate money they get from the ocean and using it to buy our properties in Nairobi, they will take Nairobi from us,” Gakuya was quoted by NCIC as saying.

The lawmaker went on to state that Somalis have taken over Eastleigh and are now targeting Nairobi CBD, asserting that Kikuyus were the original owners of those apartments.
Additionally, he stated that if Kikuyus were to sell their plots, they should sell them to fellow Kikuyus, as there are wealthy individuals within the community who can purchase these properties in Nairobi.
“When selling your properties in Nairobi, tell brokers not to bring Somalis because our people are there and we don’t want outsiders to buy these properties,” he said.
“The Somalis don’t even employ kikuyus unlike us who employ everyone irrespective of tribe. These people buy these apartments then later fills them with Somalis.”
Gakuya also mentioned that South C is now predominantly owned by Somalis, and it’s difficult to find homes owned by Black Africans in the area.
MP Drags Gachagua in Mess
He added that although they have significant numbers in Nairobi, they don’t fully utilize them.

“In Nairobi we have 1,200,000 registered voters but only 700,000 cast their votes leaving questions where the remaining votes go to,” said Gakuya.
“The Deputy President Riggy G has been at the forefront fighting for our people in Nairobi, one from our own should try vying for that seat instead of voting to some people who later turns against us.”
Gakuya alleged that apartments along the river in Gikomba were demolished because they were owned by Kikuyus adding that if the owners were from other tribes, chaos would have erupted.
He stated that the DP Gachagua is not always aware when such things take place because “directions come from the top to other people to carry out the work making it hard for him to object the directives.”
The commission said that such words are likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination, affect harmonious coexistence between different Ethnic groups in Kenya, contrary to Section 62(1) (a) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
