Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has publicly said that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is the leader of the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking during a church service in Meru County, Gachagua said Uhuru told the region to support former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during the 2022 general elections, but they didn’t listen to him.
He noted that Uhuru is their leader and had endorsed Raila, adding that the community will follow him.
“Uhuru said Raila is good, and he is our leader. So as a community we will follow what Uhuru said and support Raila is a good person,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua said the region rallied behind President William Ruto and now supports his new stance on Raila.
He explained that when Uhuru, their own, urged them to vote for Raila, claiming he was good, they refused.
Gachagua stated that when Ruto convinced them Raila was bad, they ignored Uhuru and followed Ruto’s sentiment.
However, when the President later changed his mind and said Raila was good, just like Uhuru, Gachagua began to question who was at fault.
“Ruto came and told us how bad Raila was, and we decided to ignore Uhuru and follow Ruto’s sentiment. So, when the President changed his mind and said Raila is good, and Uhuru said the same thing, I started questioning who was stupid. Because when Uhuru said Raila is good, we rebuked him, called him names, abused him, and shamed him,” he said.

Why Mt Kenya Will Support Raila
He further explained that the region will now support Raila since both Uhuru and Ruto have confirmed that he is a good person.
“We chose Ruto and rejected Raila, but now Ruto himself has said Raila is a good person. Therefore, we would be stupid to say Raila is a bad person,” he said.
He stated that during their visit to Nyanza with the president, they were warmly welcomed, and many people inquired about their relationship with Raila.

Gachagua Announces Plan to Make Friends
Gachagua added that the Mt. Kenya region has studied politics and decided never to hate any politician or community again.
He emphasized that to thrive in Kenyan politics, the region must build friendships with other politicians and communities.
“As a region, we have learned politics well. We have discussed this with elders and bishops, and we have agreed to avoid hatred towards anyone or any community, as it only leads to loss. We now understand that building friendships is key to thriving in Kenya,” he said.
