Multichoice Kenya has announced an impending price adjustment for its Digital Service Television (DStv) packages in the country.

The company in a statement on October 3, 2024, alerted Kenyans enjoying streaming services on DStv that the new prices will take effect starting from November 1.

Increases of up to Ksh500 for DStv subscriptions are set to take effect starting from the set date, according to the company.

The adjustment will see the cost of the DStv Premium package rise to Ksh11,000 while the Compact Plus package will increase to Ksh6,800.

These changes represent hikes of 4.7 percent and 4.6 percent from the current Ksh10,500 and Ksh6,500 for the respective packages.

“We would like to inform you that MultiChoice will be making changes to some of its DStv subscription prices, effective 1 November 2024,” said Multichoice Kenya in a notice issued to its subscribers.

In addition, subscribers of the Compact package will see their fees increase from Ksh3,700 to Ksh3,900, under the new price structure.

The Family package on the other hand will experience a rise from Ksh2,000 to Ksh2,100.

However, Multichoice did not detail the specific reasons behind the price increase.

This will notably be the fourth time in two years that the pay TV service has adjusted its pricing, and the second in a span of 6 months.

Back in March, Multichoice Kenya announced new prices of its packages for both DStv and GOtv streaming services which took effect on April 1.

At the time, Multichoice explained that they tried to make the increase as low as possible while acknowledging the new prices to the difficult economic outlook.

“We have adjusted the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages for 2024. MultiChoice acknowledges the difficult economic outlook and thus has kept the increase at the lowest possible point while ensuring sustainability and provision of quality services,” read part of the statement.

When the new prices listed by the company took effect, DStv Premium Package commenced paying the current Ksh10,500, a sharp increase of Ksh600 from the previous Ksh9,900 for the package which offers the highest number of channels out of all packages.

Other new prices for the packages that took effect were Ksh6,500 for the Compact Plus, Ksh3,700 for Compact, Ksh2,000 for Family, and Ksh700 for Lite, while the XtraView was set at Ksh1,500 per month.

New GOtv prices

On the other hand, Multichoice also revised the prices for GOtv with customers having to part with Ksh3,700 for Supa Plus and, Ksh1,999 for Supa packages.

GOtv Max and Lite packages in the revised prices were set at Ksh1499 and Ksh669 respectively, while GOtv Value package maintained a monthly pay of Ksh999.

DStv and GOtv streaming packages offer a wide range of programs for their audience, including live news, sports, entertainment, and children, among others.

Different packages have different numbers of channels that can be accessed by subscribers.

The DStv Premium package is the most expensive and contains 175+ and 38 HD channels offered by the platform.

The prices of DStv packages in Kenya are among the highest in Africa as compared to other countries.

As of August 31, The Kenya Times confirmed that DStv Premium subscribers in Kenya paid Ksh10,500 ($81) for the package monthly as compared to 37,000 Naira ($28) in Nigeria.

DStv Premium subscribers in South Africa on the other hand had to part with 929 Rand ($51), Uganda-290,000 UGX ($78), Tanzania-175,000 Tanzanian Shillings ($64), and Ghana-680 Ghanaian Cedi ($43).
