As university placement begins, thousands of Kenyan students are hoping to secure admission to their preferred institutions and take the first step into their career journeys.

But as they wait for the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placement results, this period can be a productive time to build practical skills.

At Beauty Point College, for instance, young people are taking up short courses ranging from nail technology and makeup artistry to braiding, massage therapy, and wig installation.

These skills can help students develop practical survival tactics, especially for those looking to earn income and meet their financial needs while in school.

Courses offered at Beauty Point College include:

  •         Diploma in Hairdressing

The Diploma in Hairdressing and Barbering equips learners with both practical and theoretical skills in areas such as conditioning and shampooing, hair design and styling, chemical hair relaxing, hair colouring, and hair cutting.

Students are also trained in weaving and braiding, dreadlocks, thermal styling, hair care principles, and trichology.

The program runs for eight months and requires essential training tools such as scissors, combs, rollers, styling products, and other salon equipment, with a personal purchase kit introduced from the third month.

Students can also specialize in short packages such as weaving, braiding, hair cutting, dreadlocks, wig installation, and advanced colouring, depending on their interests.

The course is available at a tuition fee of KSh 85,500, payable in installments, with additional costs including examination fees, uniform, ID card, and a starter kit.

  •         Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Nail Technology

The Diploma in Beauty Therapy and Nail Technology is designed as a gateway to a successful career in the fast-growing beauty industry.

By the end of the course, learners are equipped with practical and professional skills that enable them to work confidently as competent beauty therapists across all modules covered.

The programme trains students in manicure and pedicure, facial treatments, body massage, waxing, gel polish application, tweezing and threading, and cathiodermy.

The course runs for eight months, with a tuition fee of KSh 85,500 payable in installments.

  •         Diploma in Holistic Therapy

The Diploma in Holistic Therapy offers students an opportunity to become professional holistic therapists equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The syllabus covers key areas such as reflexology, hot stone massage, aromatherapy, and Indian head massage, all designed to build strong therapeutic and wellness skills.

The course runs for six months, with a tuition cost of KSh 80,500

  •         Diploma in Cosmetology

The Diploma in Cosmetology combines training in hairdressing, beauty therapy, nail technology, and free barbering courses into one comprehensive programme.

The course is designed to equip learners with versatile skills for both employment and entrepreneurship in the beauty and wellness industry.

It runs for 14 months and requires a tuition fee of KSh 159,500, payable in monthly installments of KSh 12,000.

  •         Barbering

The Certificate in Barbering is a practical, entry-level course designed to equip learners with essential skills in men’s grooming and modern barbering techniques.

The syllabus covers basic haircutting techniques, shampooing and conditioning, facial treatments, Indian head massage, clipper techniques, and fashion-forward barbering styles.

The course runs for three months, with total fees of approximately KSh 41,500, including tuition, exams, and uniform costs. Its starter kit costs an additional KSh 6,000.

  •         Certificate in Nail Technology

The Certificate in Nail Technology focuses on professional nail care and grooming for both hands and toes. The course equips students with practical skills in trimming, cleaning, polishing, and maintaining healthy nails, and introduces cuticle care and hand massage techniques.

Learners are trained in a wide range of areas, including acrylic nails, gel application, nail extensions, nail wraps, nail tips, cosmetic nail products, and creative nail art designs.

The course runs for three months, with total fees amounting to approximately KSh 50,500.

  •         Tutor Training

The Tutors Training programme is an initial teacher education course designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in teaching Cosmetology-related subjects.

The course equips learners with both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills needed for effective classroom delivery.

The course runs for six months, with total fees of approximately KSh 64,800, while booking the external examination through City & Guilds costs about KSh 35,000.

  •         Salon Management

The Certificate in Salon Management combines beauty industry knowledge with essential business skills.

Students are prepared to run and manage different types of businesses, including beauty salons, barber shops, and spas, with confidence and professionalism.

The course runs for three months, with total fees amounting to approximately KSh 35,000.
