David Munyua is a Kenyan professional darts player who made history at the PDC World Darts Championship by stunning world No.18 Mike De Decker in a dramatic first-round upset at Alexandra Palace in London.
The 30-year-old qualifier came from two sets down to stun the 2024 World Grand Prix champion 3–2, becoming the first Kenyan player ever to win a match at the World Darts Championship and guaranteeing himself a minimum payout of £15,000 (approximately Ksh2.59 million).
Munyua’s victory, achieved in front of a roaring Ally Pally crowd on December 18, 2025, capped off a dramatic afternoon session that also saw Japanese debutant Motomu Sakai progress.
David Munyua’s profile and career
The Murang’a-born veterinarian had already made history before throwing a dart at Alexandra Palace. He became the first Kenyan to qualify for the World Darts Championship after winning the African Darts Group Championship qualifier, defeating Cameron Carolissen in the final.
Munyua had never travelled outside Africa before this tournament and had to rely on sponsorship support to fund his journey from Nairobi to north London.

He balances his professional life with a sporting journey that began only three years ago, as he works full-time as a veterinarian, away from darts.
The Kenyan reportedly first picked up darts in a bar while having a drink with a friend. When the friend stepped up to play, Munyua joined in after thinking, “This looks fun.” The next day, he bought his own board. As his game improved, the same friend encouraged him to enter small local tournaments for friendship and sportsmanship.
In his win against Mike De Decker at the PDC World Darts Championship on December 18, the world No.18 surged into a 2–0 lead, appearing firmly in control. Munyua’s task became harder still when miscounts disrupted his rhythm, including in a leg where he opened with six perfect darts but failed to capitalise immediately.
The Kenyan clawed his way back into the contest with composed finishing and fearless scoring, levelling the match at 2–2. In the deciding set, Munyua suffered an early break but responded with one of the tournament’s defining moments. He achieved a stunning outer bull, treble 20, bullseye checkout of 135 to haul himself back level.
History at the PDC World Darts Championship
Moments later, with the crowd fully behind him, Munyua pinned double 20 with his fourth match dart to seal what many have described as one of the biggest upsets in World Darts Championship history.
Speaking to Sky Sports Darts after the match, Munyua struggled to contain his emotion. “It is amazing. I didn’t expect it. But now it has happened, and I’m happy about it,” he said.
Reflecting in the broader meaning of his achievement, he added:
“It is a very big moment for the sport itself, for Africa and Kenya. It is humbling. The sport can grow. I’m happy I did my best.”
He also addressed the miscounts that threatened to derail his momentum. “I’m happy the miscount [in the fourth set] didn’t affect me. I came back and still got the momentum, was focused and concentrated. I’m just happy the game didn’t go foul.”

The Ally Pally crowd strongly backed Munyua throughout the match, drawing frustration from De Decker after the loss.
“Well done to David but the crowd wow… booing and whistling shouldn’t be something that’s normal or supported,” the Belgian wrote on Instagram.
“First to complain when it happens to UK players in Europe, but then doing the same thing when the tournament is in the UK.”
The defeat marked De Decker’s sixth successive early exit from the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.
Munyua’s win guaranteed him £15,000, with a further £10,000 available should he defeat either Kevin Doets or Matthew Dennant in round two.
Their first-round clash opens Friday, December 19, during the afternoon session, with Munyua scheduled to return to the stage on Monday, December 22.
