Gor Mahia (K’Ogalo) is one of the most successful football teams in East and Central Africa, having won the Kenya Premier League a record 21 times.
Located in Nairobi, Kenya, K’Ogalo is led by Chairman Ambrose Rachier and primarily uses Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos for their home matches.
History & Origins
Gor Mahia was formed through the merger of Luo Union and Luo Sports Club.
The club is named after a legendary Luo medicine man, Gor Mahia, known for his mystical powers, “mahia” means “magic” in Luo.
Gor Mahia Continental Success
Gor Mahia became the first and only Kenyan club to win a continental title by lifting the African Cup Winners’ Cup (also known as the Nelson Mandela Cup) in 1987.
The team defeated Esperance Sportive de Tunis of Tunisia in a two-legged final, with Peter Dawo scoring crucial goals throughout the tournament, including in the final.

This win placed Gor Mahia on the African football map and remains a source of immense national pride.
Gor Mahia has been a regular participant in the CAF Champions League, especially in the 2010s and 2020s. Despite strong performances, they have not advanced beyond the group stage in the modern format.
Domestic Dominance
Gor Mahia has won the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) a record 21 times, most recently in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, despite facing FIFA bans.
The club has also secured the FKF President’s Cup (formerly Moi Golden Cup) 11 times, a record, with notable victories in 1983, 1987, and 1989.
Other domestic titles include the Kenya DSTV Super Cup (2009) and multiple CECAFA Club Championships (3 times).

K’Ogalo’s supporters, known as the Green Army, are among the most enthusiastic in Africa.
They bring drums, chants, and colour to every match, creating an electric atmosphere thanks to their large turnout to games.
Rivalries
Gor Mahia’s fiercest rivalry is with AFC Leopards, known as the Mashemeji Derby, a clash that rises above football and embodies cultural and communal pride in Kenya.
Dating back to the 1960s, this rivalry pits Gor Mahia, often associated with the Luo community, against AFC Leopards, linked to the Luhya community.
Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have clashed over 95 times, with Gor securing 33 wins, AFC Leopards 28, and 34 matches ending in draws.
Another notable rivalry is with Tusker FC, fueled by competitive title races, though it lacks the cultural intensity of the Mashemeji Derby
