The highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 quarterfinal clash between Kenya and Madagascar has seen overwhelming demand, with all tickets made available by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) completely sold out as of August 20.

This surge in fan interest reflects the incredible support for the Harambee Stars, who continue to excite the nation with their performances on home soil.

However, the sold-out status of the match also brings fresh challenges. During some of Kenya’s group stage matches, which similarly had no tickets left by matchday, scores of fans without tickets attempted and forced their way into the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani.

While their passion is commendable, such actions risk not only personal safety but also Kenya’s growing reputation as a capable host of major international tournaments, including the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Appeal to increase capacity

Meanwhile, CAF increased ticket prices for the knockout round, setting them at Ksh600 (Silver) and Ksh250 (Regular) — up from Ksh500 and Ksh200 during the group stages.

Kenya’s group-stage matches all sold out, but many fans gained entry without tickets, particularly during the first three fixtures — prompting CAF to intervene. The Confederation of African Football fined Kenya and restricted match attendance to 60% capacity due to security breaches.

For the final group match against Zambia, only about 27,000 fans were allowed into the 48,000-seater stadium. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has since appealed the decision, arguing that security protocols were successfully enforced during that game.

In response, CAF has since approved an 80% stadium capacity for Kenya’s CHAN quarterfinal clash against Madagascar, meaning that at least 38,400 fans are expected to attend the match.

This time, ahead of the decisive quarterfinal match on Friday, August 22, organisers and football authorities are urging fans without tickets to stay away from the stadium and instead explore several safe, exciting, and fully official ways to be part of the action.

How to watch the Kenya vs Madagascar CHAN 2024 match

Just because you’re not in the stadium doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Several alternatives have been set up to ensure every fan has a front-row seat to the action—wherever they are.

  1. Watch the match live on TV or online

Football fans across Kenya can follow the match live and uninterrupted through officially licensed broadcasters:

  • Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) – The national broadcaster is airing all Harambee Stars matches, including the Kenya vs Madagascar quarterfinal clash, live and free-to-air. Other matches KBC will air include the 3rd place play-off match scheduled for August 29 at the Mandela National Stadium, in Kampala, and the CHAN 2024 final match scheduled for August 30 at MISC, Kasarani.
  • SuperSport Channel 227 (via DStv Kenya) – Broadcasting all Kenya matches.
  • Azam TV – Available via satellite with multilingual commentary options.

These broadcasters have exclusive rights.

Enjoy the fan zones

To bring the stadium atmosphere closer to the people, FKF, in collaboration with local authorities, has set up designated Fan Zones — public spaces equipped with large screens, sound systems, and security — for safe, vibrant communal viewing.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has announced that, in partnership with the Local Organising Committee, more fan zones have been added ahead of Friday’s clash.

In Nairobi, the official zones have been expanded from 8 to 13, including new centres in Ruiru, Dagoretti, Camp Toyoyo, and Babadogo.

The initial fan zones included Uhuru Park (Nairobi CBD), Lucky Summer – Ngomongo area (Behind Kasarani Stadium), Dandora Stadium, Utalii Grounds (Stima Club), Jacaranda Grounds (Eastlands), Pand Pieri Grounds in Githurai, and Kibera DC Grounds.

In partnership with the Mombasa County Government, six more fan zones will also be set up in the county at Changamwe Volleyball Grounds, St. Mary’s Bangladesh Grounds, Shelly Beach in Likoni, Hassan Joho Stadium, and Bilima Grounds.

CS Mvurya further welcomed private and county stakeholders interested in establishing fan zones across Nairobi and Mombasa as alternative venues for fans to enjoy the games.

These festival zones are free to access and designed to recreate the matchday atmosphere with live commentary, music, food vendors, and fan merchandise.

Security and crowd control measures will also be in place to ensure a safe experience for all attendees.
