How to Watch Premier League if You Don’t Have DStv

Kenya is home to one of the most passionate English Premier League (EPL) fanbases in the world. With the 2025/26 season having kicked off in August, and five match weeks already played, local fans are once again rallying behind their favorite English clubs.

But for many Kenyans, access to live matches has traditionally depended on a DStv or GOtv subscription — something not everyone can afford.

To watch the Premier League in Kenya if you don’t have DStv, there are alternative ways to catch all the action live and legally.

English Premier League on Showmax

One of the most accessible and legal ways to stream all 380 Premier League matches in Kenya is through Showmax, which offers a Premier League Mobile Plan dedicated exclusively to live EPL action.

This plan provides live streaming of every EPL game, along with match highlights, replays, pre- and post-match analysis, interviews, talk shows, and behind-the-scenes content.

Pricing for Showmax’s Premier League plans starts at just Ksh450 per month for the mobile-only option, which works on smartphones and tablets. For those seeking a broader experience, the Entertainment + Premier League (Mobile Only) plan is available at Ksh520, combining football content with access to Showmax’s entertainment library.

Alternatively, viewers can opt for the Entertainment + Premier League (All Devices) plan, which costs Ksh800 per month. Please note that EPL content on Showmax is only accessible via mobile devices, not smart TVs, laptops, or desktop browsers.

The PL plans cannot also be cast onto a TV set and are therefore not suitable for social gatherings (for households, the Showmax Entertainment plan is recommended but excludes live sport)

How to access Showmax

  1. Download the App: Available on Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Huawei App Gallery.
  2. Subscribe: Choose your preferred plan. You can pay via Visa, MasterCard, M-Pesa, DStv account, or prepaid vouchers.
  3. Watch: Log in and start streaming on your mobile device.

SuperSport app

The SuperSport app offers live match streaming to DStv subscribers within Sub-Saharan Africa. To access live games, users must link the app to their DStv account using a Connect ID. While the app itself is free to download, live video content is restricted to users with an active DStv subscription and is subject to regional broadcasting rights — meaning live streaming is only available within Sub-Saharan Africa.

However, for users who do not have a DStv subscription or who live outside the region, the SuperSport app still provides a valuable experience. It offers free access to real-time scores, fixtures, match stats, news updates, and video highlights, making it a great option for staying updated on the go.

The app is available globally on both Android and iOS platforms and does not require a DStv account for access to non-live content.

Other streaming options

DAZN

DAZN is a well-known global sports streaming platform. While its availability in Kenya is limited, some content may be accessible depending on regional licensing. Always check the Kenyan version of their website to confirm what’s available.

Unofficial streaming apps

The Google Play Store hosts numerous mobile apps that stream live football matches. However, most of these apps come with significant limitations and concerns that can affect the viewing experience.

Users often encounter excessive advertisements that interrupt or delay their streaming experience. In some cases, the video quality is poor, with grainy visuals or unstable connections. Additionally, a significant number of these apps provide commentary in foreign languages—most commonly Arabic or Spanish—which may not be ideal for Kenyan viewers seeking English coverage.

Another common issue is frequent buffering and app crashes, especially during high-traffic matches. These interruptions can make it frustrating to follow a game in real time.

Also, the legality of these apps is questionable. Many do not have the proper licenses to broadcast Premier League matches or other football content, as they often scrape or mirror coverage from official broadcasters, raising concerns about copyright infringement and potential security risks. Always exercise caution when using such platforms, as they may not only violate broadcasting laws but also expose your device to malware or intrusive ads.

TV 47 and SportyTV deal

Earlier this year, Cape Media’s TV 47 signed a major partnership with SportyTV, a Dubai-based sports broadcaster, to air top-tier European football leagues live on free-to-air television—a significant win for Kenyan fans who lack access to pay-TV.

Starting from the 2025/26 season, fans will be able to watch matches from Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, and Germany’s Bundesliga without needing a subscription service.

The TV 47–SportyTV deal, however, does not include the English Premier League, which remains exclusively available through SuperSport (DStv/GOtv) and Showmax platforms.

This deal is a game-changer for millions of Kenyans who depend on free-to-air TV for sports, especially at a time when platforms like DStv remain too costly for many households. A 2023 report by the Communications Authority of Kenya revealed that only 15% of homes in the country subscribe to pay-TV services.

SportyTV is part of the Sporty Group, a digital entertainment company with operations across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It has already established a strong presence in markets such as Nigeria and Ghana, where it has formed similar partnerships with local broadcasters to deliver elite football competitions — including the FIFA Club World Cup — free to the public.

Known for its strategy of making premium football more accessible through free-to-air platforms, SportyTV challenges traditional pay-TV models that have long dominated the African market. In Nigeria and Ghana, its content is already available in multiple cities via local stations.

In Kenya, the broadcaster has launched its services through a partnership with TV 47, but it is still in its early stages. Currently, SportyTV does not hold a formal broadcasting license in Kenya. Only its sister station, SportyFM, is officially licensed to operate in the country.
