List of Countries That Have Qualified for World Cup 2026

The road to the FIFA World Cup 2026 is heating up, with 18 of the 48 available spots already filled as the countdown to the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States continues.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with the main draw scheduled for December 5, where U.S. President Trump is expected to be involved.

Trump will join FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the John F. Kennedy Center, a performing arts venue, to decide the group stage fixtures.

It will be the biggest yet, with 48 nations taking part – 16 more than the last edition in Qatar 2022.

World Cup 2026 Qualification Places

The slots are shared among the six football confederations around the world.

Asia (AFC) has been allocated eight direct places, with a chance for an additional spot through the play-off tournament.

Africa (CAF) will send nine teams directly, plus one more that could qualify via the play-offs.

North, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf), which includes the host nations Canada, Mexico, and the USA, gets six direct places and two play-off spots.

South America (CONMEBOL) receives six direct berths and one play-off slot.

Oceania (OFC), usually with limited representation, secures one guaranteed place along with a play-off chance.

Europe (UEFA), the continent with the strongest record at the tournament, has been granted 16 direct places. 12 group runners-up and four further teams based on their Nations League ranking – will enter four play-off paths, with each providing a further spot at the finals.

Two final slots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be decided through an inter-confederation play-off.

This mini tournament, scheduled for March 2026, will feature six teams. Each confederation, apart from UEFA, will send one representative, while the host region’s confederation (Concacaf) will provide an additional team.

List of Countries That Have Qualified for World Cup 2026

The three co-hosts — Canada, Mexico, and the USA — automatically feature at the showpiece, with Canada making back-to-back appearances for the first time in history.

For Mexico, this will mark a record third time hosting, following 1970 and 1986, while the USA returns to the global stage for its 12th finals.

Teams from UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), CONCACAF (North, Central America and the Caribbean), AFC (Asia), OFC (Oceania), and CAF (Africa) compete in their own qualifying campaigns.

From Asia (AFC), Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Jordan have confirmed their places, with Uzbekistan and Jordan making history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cups.

Japan booked their ticket with three games to spare in the third round of the AFC preliminaries and will compete in their eighth consecutive World Cup. The Iranians qualified for their fourth successive FIFA World Cup edition.

Africa (CAF) will be represented so far by Morocco, who lit up Qatar 2022 with a semi-final run, and Tunisia, who sealed qualification with a dramatic late winner against Equatorial Guinea.  Others on the list are Egypt, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Algeria, Cape Verde, and Ghana.

The Atlas Lions became the first team from the Mother Continent to reach the 2026 showpiece with an emphatic 5-0 win over Niger on September 5. 

In South America (CONMEBOL), six powerhouses have already secured their tickets: Argentina, the reigning world champions, were the first CONMEBOL team to qualify; Brazil, who maintain their perfect record of appearing at every finals; Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay.

Oceania (OFC) will have New Zealand, who defeated New Caledonia in the qualifiers, returning for their third World Cup, having previously qualified for the 1982 and 2010 editions.

Meanwhile, the play-off tournament lineup has begun to take shape, with Bolivia and New Caledonia among the six teams set to battle for the last few slots.
