The Kenya Rugby Union has suffered yet another blow after Willy Ambaka announced his retirement from Rugby Sevens just days after Collins Injera did so.
Taking to his Twitter account on Thursday, January 26, Ambaka thanked the KRU for his 13 years of his life spent on the pitch as a rugby player.
“While it has been a tremendous journey, now it is time to pull the curtains on my International Rugby 7s journey. This is why I have come to the decision that I will be playing my final leg in Sydney this season,”
The 32-year old nostalgically recalled his dream to play rugby since he was young.

“As a schoolboy, I could only dream of achieving some of the things I have achieved. I couldn’t have imagined how many lows the journey would entail, and I cherish every moment as they made me who I am. Whether off the pitch or on the pitch. I hold many experiences close to my heart,” Ambaka said.
The sportsman further revealed that he cherishes the experiences he has earned, which include winning the final in Singapore back in 2016, playing in two Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games and three Rugby 7s World Cups.
He further thanked his supporters and those who watched Kenya play in the rugby tournaments. “I would like to personaly thank the late Benjamin Ayimba, Mike Friday, Charles Cardovillis, Edward Kinyany, Geofrey Kimani, Damien McGrath and, of course, my loving family,” he said.
Ambaka joins Injera who retired from the sport on Tuesday, January 24.
During his 17-years as a rugby player, Injera ranked second on the top try scorers in the world series was a key member of the Shujaa team that went on to win its first and only circuit leg in Singapore in 2016 alongside his brother Humphrey Khayange.
The 36-year-old is second to Britain’s Dan Norton in the rugby sevens World Series try-scoring charts with 271 touchdowns.
He made his debut in 2008-2009 going on to score a total of 42 tries to announce himself on the global stage.
